Default Attn ALL PET OWNERS!!! Major Food recall!

I know most of you have heard about this.. but
    Major Recall of Pet Food

(Union, NJ - WABC, March 18, 2007) - Silviene Grzybowski became worried when her local pet store pulled the food she normally feeds her cat and posted an announcement saying it, and many other popular pet foods, had been recalled. Her cat, Smokey, hadn't been eating for days.

"The vet told us to buy her her favorite food, but I'm going to call the vet right now," Grzybowski said.

Menu Foods, the Ontario-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold throughout North America under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said.

Two other companies - Nestle Purina PetCare Co. and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. - said Saturday that as a precaution they were voluntarily recalling some products made by Menu Foods.

Many stores that sold the affected brands frantically pulled packages off shelves.

Ron Finegold of Boynton Beach, Fla., said he noticed about a week or so ago that his family's 3-year-old cat - who was regularly fed a variety of Iams cat food - had stopped eating and did not appear well. He quickly took the animal to the veterinarian, who determined she was in renal failure.

He said he heard about the recall on the radio Friday night. He checked his trash, and found out he had given the cat some of the affected food.

"That's when I realized (the illness) had to be related," Finegold said. "She won't be eating that stuff anymore."

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was available from the Menu Foods Web site, http://www.menufoods.com/recall. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information - (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708 - but callers kept the lines busy for much of Saturday.

Menu Foods' chief executive and president Paul Henderson told the Associated Press on Friday that the company was still trying to figure out what happened.

He said that the company had received an undisclosed number of owner complaints that dogs and cats were vomiting and suffering kidney failure after eating its products. He estimated that the recall would cost the company, which is mostly owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, an estimated $26 million to $34 million.

Sarah Tuite, a company spokeswoman, has said the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, which has since been dropped for another source. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Julie Zawisza said it is still too early to determine what could have affected the food. Zawisza added that even if wheat gluten is the source "it doesn't necessarily mean the wheat gluten per se. It could be another substance associated with the wheat gluten."

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches from Dec. 3 to March 6.

In Omaha, Neb., Susan Balvanz said she sometimes feeds her five cats packets of sliced meat and gravy sold by Nutro Products, one of the brands affected.

"I've done so much research on pet food. It didn't surprise me but it scared me all the same," said Balvanz.

She said her 9-year-old cat, Boots, was especially fond of the food but seemed to have lost its appetite in the last few days.

At the Missouri Valley Veterinary Clinic in Bismarck, N.D., veterinarian Jacob Carlson has been referring worried pet owners to the Menu Foods web site.

"We've had a lot of calls," Carlson said, although none of his patients were sick.

The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

Working at a vet I found out a bit more info on this food recall.. Apparently there were a few slips ups made and higher ups found out about some stuff going into the dog food which shouldnt have... I.e. Euthanized cats/dogs were being used in the food and when cooked the medication in them including the buthanasia solution was still in the food.. apparently there were alot of cases of cats (more than dogs) coming in for renal failure.. (now this is all hearsay for now im hearing from some of the food reps and such) but its interesting nontheless...

this gave me a scare a few days ago as I just switched from Natural Life Puppy to Ol Roy Puppy (Lamb Mix) which has the exact same ingredients at a fraction of the cost. Luckily the formula I have isn't on the recall list.

If you read up on the site and on alot of the info and complaints about ol' Roy.. they are one of the biggest offenders of putting rotten stuff in their dog food.. I have heard many horror stories about stuff being put into ol' roy and if you ask most vets.. they will tell you to throw away the food.. Nutro dry food is amazing because they dont use any fillers.. instead of corn meal they use rice.. my dog has been amazing on nutro.. I also like food such as natures veriaty and raw instincts.. its all organic food and its very very good for the dog..

Add 1 more to the list of casualties of this mess. My friend's cat had to be put down this morning due to kidney failure which they suspect is directly related to eating the contaminated Iams wet food. Poor thing, it really suffered.

I actually feel blessed that my puppy got Pancreatitis when she did, because we fed her Eukanuba wet food every night. Now we feed her prescription food which, thankfully, wasn't listed in the recall. I don't know what I'd do without my princess.

My heart goes out to all the pet owners suffering through this mess.

Anytime.. add 5 more to the list of casualtys from my vet.. although Im pretty pissed cause Eukanuba isnt wanting to stand behind their product.. we had 2 dogs come in from the same family.. eating the eukanuba food.. on the recall list.. both died.. no eukanuba is saying they have to go through medical records.. and decide if this indeed is the case cause with these two it was liver failure.. one was 10 and the other was 12...

    hmmmmmmmm........

Minnie eats Eukanuba Cuts & Gravy for dinner every night...

Minnie starts vomitting and won't eat...

Minnie gets diagnosed with Pancreatitis from unknown cause...

We switch her food and she's healthy again. Yippee!

    This is in January.

Now it's March and a factory voluntarily recalls all Eukanuba Cuts & Gravy packets...

I'm thinking there may be a correlation.

Yea my min pin eats Eukanuba dry food. but she was pretty sick for a while she was poo'ing every where and sometimes vomiting. this was when u had said something about Parvo. so we took her t the vet but they didnt do a parvo test becasue they said she was to old, shes 4, and parvowouldnt affect her they also said that becasue of her size, 4.5 lbs, if she get parvo she would have died. and the the recall came out and i was freaking but the Vet setnt some prescription food and shes een alot better.. but where do i get the nutro stuff. and is it good for toy breeds. she has a ridiculously sensitie stomach though.

Good thing Tango only eats mice.

He's racist though...he only eats white mice. We gave him a brown one once and he wouldn't touch it.

Rat Poison Found in Recalled Pet Food
    By MARK JOHNSON
    AP
ALBANY, N.Y. (March 23) - Tests turned up rat poison in the pet food suspected of causing kidney failure in dogs and cats across the country and killing at least 16, state officials and scientists announced Friday.
The toxin was identified as aminopterin, which is used to kill rats in some countries, state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said. Aminopterin is not registered for killing rodents in the United States, though it is used as a cancer drug, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

State officials did not say how they believe Aminopterin got into the now-recalled pet food, though they said no criminal investigations had been launched.

The Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation was focusing on wheat gluten in the pet food. Wheat gluten itself would not cause kidney failure, but the common ingredient could have been contaminated, the FDA said.

The pet deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

Aminopterin, also used as a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses. It inhibits the growth of malignant cells and suppresses the immune system

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE RECALL LIST..
HILLS SCIENCE DIET IS RECALLING DRY FELINE M/D PRECRIPTION FOOD.
PURINA IS ALSO RECALLING THEIR ENTIRE LINE OF ALPO WET FOOD..

IF YOU ARE FEEDING EITHER OF THESE FOODS, STOP NOW, CALL YOUR VET, AND KEEP THE FOOD.. If god forbid something happens you will need the food.. so keep it..

I have been in contact with nutro, hills, and iams/eukanuba reps for the past few days so if you guys have any questions please dont hesitate to ask...

What about Pedigree puppy wet food?

Any dry foods besides the Science diet cat food?

Max was eating Royal Kanin at first but we switched him to Beneful dry and a little Pedigree wet mixed in and he chows it down like a pound puppy. Is that cool for now?

purina only had alpo and mighty dog.. nothing else... and there is no other dry food recalled except the m/d cat food... neither beneful or pedigree were on the list.. so you should be fine.. im still feeding my dog the nutro dry and im still feeding my cats friskees and my new kitten is getting dry science diet kitten... its supposed to be more lethal to cats then dogs anyways... but i know of atleast 10-20 animals that got sick from the food at my vet and possibly 3-7 that have died from it.. its very very scary to say the least thatd the fda doesnt monitor this industry like they do for people..

Well let me know if anything changes because I'm feeding the puppy what I listed above and the other dogs Pedigree dry. Ms. Selena gets el cheapo Pet Pride variety dry food.

Let me know if anything else comes up.

Ren i have a question my dog started throwing up ..
ive been feeding her nutro since you told me its the best awhile back ..
she had a litter of 11 puppys and there all alive and healthy and running and barking etc .
they were born on the 7th of march and i was wondering ..
how much longer till her nipples swell down back to normal ??
is it normal for the dog to throw up during the process of feeding the youngs ??
im gunna bring her to the vet on monday to double check if shes healthy ..
she has also been taking diarrea every since the puppys were born ..
which im thinking is from her eating the piss and shit from the puppys ..
also the snacks i have to give them are ..

    milk bone
    milk bone w/ bone marrow
    purina - moist & meaty
    purina - bacon strips
    jerky treats - beef sirloin
    tasty treats - chicken
and also those slim jim looking treats forgot what it was called cause my mom threw it out and poured the rest into an emtpy container ..
    NY STAY HIGH !!!
