House train a puppy?

1. Puppy needs a safe place to call his own... crate, cage, playpen- the smaller the better b/c this is his "den" (that's right, just like when wolfie momy lived out in the wild, there were dens)
-ideally you want this area to be no more than 1.5X the length he is
(so a play pen is if you know he'll have accidents b/c you have to leave him for more than 3 hours at a time)

2. encourage him to get comfortable with this area by putting an old towel, blanket, your shirt etc. to associate the crate with your smell for pleasententries
-also encourage him by tossing treats towards the back of the DEN so he walks in by himself.... do NOT shut the door the first few times you do this exercise (just cal him back to you- no treat should be needed)
-after a few treats he should feel comfortable going in and out... then toss a treat in and shut the door- don't say anything to him- but watch his body and right before you think he's getting nervous- open the door and call him out


Sweet- now he's crate trained and won't pee on stuff when you can't watch him!!!



3. When is potty time? EVERYTIME your puppy drinks a lot of water or eats a meal (2-3x a day) or plays hard with you; take him to the potty area and say "go potty" or whatever you say. If he has eaten or had water, wait about 10-15mins; each dog is different.
Stay with him and give him about 10-20 mins, with encouragement, to go potty.
If he does not, put him in his DEN for another 15-20mins (maybe shorter depending on how young he is- and make sure he isn't relieving himself in the DEN during this time). Then give him another opportunity. This is very important.
And remember as puppy grows older, they can hold it longer. So always encourage potty first, then if you want to play with him or whatever do it after potty is successful.

4. WATCH him ALL THE TIME. This literally means keep your eyes on him at all times; if you look out the window to see a car passing- that's enough time for him to go potty. Yep, it is. If you can't watch him, he goes in his DEN.
But what if you can't watch him? You don't want him sitting in the crate all day right?

5. Tether him to yourself. Yep, take the leash, and tie it to your belt loop; where you go, he goes. This is an alternative to WATCH HIM ALL THE TIME!! This way you can do stuff (making food etc) you'll feel him pulling away from you for no reason he most likely has to go potty.
Take him over to the potty area (you can pick him up and carry him there b/c he probably really has to go) and encourage him to go potty.

6. OH MY GOSH, he's PEE-ING on the _________!!
Well, take that rolled up newspaper and start beating yourself on the head with it!!
No, I'm j/k. But do something to stop him- clap your hands, shake a can with pennies in it. But startle him (no yelling at him or using his name).
Quickly pick him up and take him to the potty spot to finish his business. If he finishes and you want to give him a treat; its up to you.



Just keep in mind that he is an animal. Its amazing that people invite animals into their house and expect them to behave like humans.
But I wouldn't have my dog any other way.

greaT IDEAS . also BE patient. . . i gets really fustrating at times

i used a similar method . for potty training my wife's rat terrier.
i enclosed a section of the room enough for about 6 -8 puppy pads. and every week i would take one out till eventually there was only 1. now thats the place he goes where ever the puppy pad is at . there is some accidens here and there but for the most part he goes where hes suppose to .

now i jsut have to work on him bitting and scrathing the couches . and yeah he has ENOUGH toys.

Get him tired, a tired dog is a happy dog

make sure to pet it and tell it it's done good while it waits for u at the door... treats aren't always the best idea, cause then they expect it every time... praising it for doing good works too so... mix it up..

remember that the timing of treats is most important
so the dog associates the treat with the potty, you have to give it to him the second he finishes going potty (for example: if you give it to him for coming to you after you called him after he went potty, then he thinks he got a treat for coming to you)
