    Default House train a puppy?

What have you guys done to house train your dogs? I have had a puppy for a bout three weeks and that thing keeps pissing on my fucking leather couches and recliner. I know it takes a little bit but if I got my ass beat when I pissed on the furniture and got a treat when I pissed outside I think I would learn real quick.

This may sound ridiculous but some kennel place told us to put tin foil or something on our couches, I just looked at them like what the fuck are you talking about. That's only if it's jumping on your couches. But we just kept an eye on it and if it pissed and we caught it we would put it outside for a while. And eventually it learned to go to the back door if it needed to piss. Good luck.

Its usually below zero outside so she wont do anything outside so were trying to get her to use a litter box with piddle paper in it, shit aint going too good.

Haha. That sucks. Puppies are frustrating but also awesome. They are little and energetic but are retards at times. I know nothing about dogs trying to pee and poop inside, I would suggest all hard wood floors so the shits easy to wipe up.

We keep her litter box thing in the kitchen so if she pisses beside it we can just grab a paper towel and wipe it up and it wont leave a smell in our house.

i trained mine by doing this. when he would shit or piss in the house i would make him watch me wipe it up and carry it and my dog outside in a certain area and put the paper towel on the ground a tell him that this is where he goes and when he did i would give a treat. it took about 3 days but worked great. you are not supposed to beat them just raise your voice. they say beating them confuses them and trust me mine was a confused bastard before i heard about this way. i hope it works for you good luck.

I agree with boostedb16. Take the "accident" outside to where you want the dog to go & that way they know that's where their bathroom is. Also, watch when your dog drinks and schedule their food. If you know when it goes in, you know when it goes out. I would even pick up the water after a certain time before bed. I even tell my clients (I'm a dog trainer) to keep a log on their potty habits. That way they know how long after they eat/drink to take them out and to keep taking them out until they go. Use a potty command... like "go potty". that way they can sort of go on command or at least know why you are bringing them outside. When you are housebreaking do not let them out of your sight. That way if they do go, you are catching them in the act & can quickly take them out. Prevention is the key Hope this helps.

Default How to House Train 101:

    1. Puppy needs a safe place to call his own... crate, cage, playpen- the smaller the better b/c this is his "den" (that's right, just like when wolfie momy lived out in the wild, there were dens)
-ideally you want this area to be no more than 1.5X the length he is
(so a play pen is if you know he'll have accidents b/c you have to leave him for more than 3 hours at a time)

    2. encourage him to get comfortable with this area by putting an old towel, blanket, your shirt etc. to associate the crate with your smell for pleasententries
-also encourage him by tossing treats towards the back of the DEN so he walks in by himself.... do NOT shut the door the first few times you do this exercise (just cal him back to you- no treat should be needed)
-after a few treats he should feel comfortable going in and out... then toss a treat in and shut the door- don't say anything to him- but watch his body and right before you think he's getting nervous- open the door and call him out

Sweet- now he's crate trained and won't pee on stuff when you can't watch him!!!

    3. When is potty time? EVERYTIME your puppy drinks a lot of water or eats a meal (2-3x a day) or plays hard with you; take him to the potty area and say "go potty" or whatever you say. If he has eaten or had water, wait about 10-15mins; each dog is different.
Stay with him and give him about 10-20 mins, with encouragement, to go potty.
If he does not, put him in his DEN for another 15-20mins (maybe shorter depending on how young he is- and make sure he isn't relieving himself in the DEN during this time). Then give him another opportunity. This is very important.
And remember as puppy grows older, they can hold it longer. So always encourage potty first, then if you want to play with him or whatever do it after potty is successful.

    4. WATCH him ALL THE TIME. This literally means keep your eyes on him at all times; if you look out the window to see a car passing- that's enough time for him to go potty. Yep, it is. If you can't watch him, he goes in his DEN.
But what if you can't watch him? You don't want him sitting in the crate all day right?

    5. Tether him to yourself. Yep, take the leash, and tie it to your belt loop; where you go, he goes. This is an alternative to WATCH HIM ALL THE TIME!! This way you can do stuff (making food etc) you'll feel him pulling away from you for no reason he most likely has to go potty.
Take him over to the potty area (you can pick him up and carry him there b/c he probably really has to go) and encourage him to go potty.

    6. OH MY GOSH, he's PEE-ING on the _________!!
Well, take that rolled up newspaper and start beating yourself on the head with it!!
No, I'm j/k. But do something to stop him- clap your hands, shake a can with pennies in it. But startle him (no yelling at him or using his name).
Quickly pick him up and take him to the potty spot to finish his business. If he finishes and you want to give him a treat; its up to you.

Just keep in mind that he is an animal. Its amazing that people invite animals into their house and expect them to behave like humans.
But I wouldn't have my dog any other way.

greaT IDEAS . also BE patient. . . i gets really fustrating at times

i used a similar method . for potty training my wife's rat terrier.
i enclosed a section of the room enough for about 6 -8 puppy pads. and every week i would take one out till eventually there was only 1. now thats the place he goes where ever the puppy pad is at . there is some accidens here and there but for the most part he goes where hes suppose to .

now i jsut have to work on him bitting and scrathing the couches . and yeah he has ENOUGH toys.

take it outside as often as possible... that's really about all that helps.. give him treats when he goes outside... and scold him when he does inside..

make sure to watch him and if he goes to the door immediately get up...

u don't make a dog wait when he's doing what u want.. i've waited.. they won't sit at the door long.. lol...

make sure to pet it and tell it it's done good while it waits for u at the door... treats aren't always the best idea, cause then they expect it every time... praising it for doing good works too so... mix it up..

dogs are weird... We have 2 and both are trained... but sometimes.. they like to be idiots and piss in corners.

patience and spending alot of time with them is good. take it outside and praise when it does a good job.. The key is patience.. and remember.. they will always have accidents....

what would Cesar say? "he needs more time outside walking" and "you need to satisfy his inner beast through the walk"
Get him tired, a tired dog is a happy dog

remember that the timing of treats is most important
so the dog associates the treat with the potty, you have to give it to him the second he finishes going potty (for example: if you give it to him for coming to you after you called him after he went potty, then he thinks he got a treat for coming to you)

if you're watching the puppy all the time- then you know how much he had to drink

You really should leave water out for him to drink anytime (except at night- and never in the DEN but can be in the play pen... I have more suggestions if you want to use a play pen)

and food should be on a schedule- other wise you'll end up with a dog that is lazy to eat all its food; b/c the food is always available
food should be a 'life reward'

We are giving the dog to some friends later on today. It will be the best since we are moving down to GA soon, it will make it much easier for us to find a place to live without a dog. Plus we are trying to have a baby.

    also to add to it:

only scold your dog when he is in the act. Do not punish him after he's done, otherwise he will just hide it from you.

it took a while but mine finally caught on at about 6 months.
even if he pee'd everything in him in the house we would still take him outside to his spot. always praise him when he's doing the right thing. we never used treats, just praise and petting him.

we would also take his water away a little bit before bed time and take him out frequently.

now my dog goes to the front door and taps on the door knob when he has to go to the bathroom. We have a wireless fence for him now and when he goes outside and he still goes to the exact same spot to pee that we took him to when he was little.
