    I guess, I just see normal messenger bags as more of a horizontal rectangle....

    I'll show you what I would call a messenger bag as opposed to the one you're talking about...I think the issue is that the bags went from being used by students and bike messengers (hence the name), to just being a generic term given to male over the shoulder bags... I don't know...
