    DALLAS, TX (KTRK) -- A one-in-a-million chance has doctors pulling out their medical history books to explain how a set of twin baby boys have two different fathers.

    It happened to Mia Washington of Dallas. A paternity test showed her 11-month-old twins, Jordan and Justin, were fathered by two different men. Authorities say it's so rare there have been only 10 other known cases worldwide.

    According to doctors, if a woman has more than one sexual partner while she is ovulating, there is a chance that different sperm cells can fertilize two separate eggs.

    It's called "heteropaternal superfecundation." Experts say it's more common in animals. The first recorded human case was in 1810.

    Scientists say superfecundation most commonly happens within hours or days of the first instance of fertilization. Sperm cells can live inside a woman's body for 4 to 5 days. And once ovulation occurs, the egg remains viable for 12 to 48 hours before it begins to disintegrate. So the fertile period can last from 5 to 7 days.

    Um I was listening to a show on V103 and this guy thought that only one of the twins wasn't his, so they only wanted to test one. The talk show hists were all laughing at him because he only wanted to test one, like the he already knew the other one WAS his, but this one wasn't. Turned out that the baby wasn't his, but they only tested one, so they assumed that the other one wasn't either. He should have tested both since you obviously never know!
