we are paying enough thats why we are getting something back. i've always was told its best to be at - 0 - meaning... 0 back / 0 owed. the gov is gonna get your money one way or another but i would rather have the bulk of my money through out the year instead of waiting for a check every year.

Yeeeeah... that's kind of how it works. Your refund is the amount you overpaid. To get back $12,000... you have to pay $12,000. Well, unless you qualify for Earned Income Credit but I doubt anyone getting EIC paid in that much.

The max for EIC is about $4800. I think that's crap but that's a whole other issue.

Correct. They can be fined for not providing them.

But, if you have your last paycheck from 2008 and you know how to read it, everything you need is on there. I do my taxes on about 1/15 every year. Sometimes I wait for my W-2 and 1098's but I usually don't.
