"In fact, it was van Hooydonk—and not BMW Design Chief Chris Bangle—who penned the lines of the controversial 2002 7 Series and its provocatively heavy back end, since dubbed, erroneously, the "Bangle Butt." "
Still, Bangle was the one approving the designs at his position. Many of Bangles own designs are on the 7 series. They are also on the 5 and 6 series.

I believe that in this case, Hooydonk drew the actual car's lines while Chris added his touches. I doubt a man in as a high of a position as Hooydonk would go unnoted for those lines. It is also Hooydonk that will replace Bangle at BMW now.

80's-early 90's BMW's > late model BMW's

Bentley finally divorced Rolls in 1998 and went under VW while RR went to BMW who was making their engines at the time.

Bentley has been much better under VW than they ever were under Rolls. BMW has also been quite successful with RR as the Phantom outsold the Maybach by more than 3 to 1 since release.
