Did you read my post? I'm not really sure that that makes any sense, are you asking me whether i think the Z32 has better lines than, say, Bangle's E65 design? Absolutely.

E92 though? Nah. His stuff is hit and miss, but imho a lot of his misses were BIG misses.

    1935-1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900
    Superb inspiration for Enzo Ferrari.

    1952-1955 Bentley R-type Continental
Designed by Brits, built by Brits, but not sold to Brits.

    1971-1975 BMW 3.0CS/CSi/CSL
    The coupe as art.

    1937-1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic
    A seam-ingly sensational design.

    1963-1965 Buick Riviera
Out of the fog came a Buick for the ages.

    1938-1941 Cadillac 60 Special
A landmark sedan that got a special push from Harley Earl.

    1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray
Bill Mitchell sticks it to Zora Arkus-Duntov.

    1947-1952 Cisitalia 202 coupe
It ushered in the modern postwar era.

    1936-1937 Cord 810/812
What does Harley Earl know, anyway?

    1964-1968 Ferrari 275GTB, GTB/4
    The Sophia Loren of supercars.

    1968-1974 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona
    All-around masterpiece.

    1968-1979 Jaguar XJ6
It defines the Jaguar look to this day.

    1949-1954 Jaguar XK120
    Who needs drawings?

    1961-1966 Jaguar XK-E
    Phalliform perfection.

    1966-1972 Lamborghini Miura
A beauty under the skin, as well.

    1940-1941 Lincoln Continental
    The boss's custom.

    1961 Lincoln Continental
    Trumping Cadillac at last.

    1957-1963 Lotus Elite
    Designed by an accountant.

    1967-1973 Maserati Ghibli
A high-water mark from an acknowledged master.

    1954-1957 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing
Shaped by the wind, undaunted by the rules.

    1936-1938 Mercedes-Benz 500K/540K Special Roadster
    Teutonic opulence.

    1990-1996 Nissan 300ZX
    Basking crocodile.

Designed by Isao Sono and Toshio Yamashita
Japan has been making really good cars for a long time, but few have measured up to world standards for styling. Of those, Nissan's crocodile-faced 300ZX is arguably the best, and it has been almost universally admired by designers from other companies for its refinement, elegant surface development, and painstaking detail design. Of several variants, the best is the plain two-seat coupe with a fixed roof--a symphony of pure lines with no extraneous breaks. The rare long-wheelbase model is a practical two-plus-two, but, like the convertibles, it lost the magic appearance.

    1966-1967 Oldsmobile Toronado
An homage that was as successful as the original.

    1953-1954 Studebaker Starliner
It couldn't save Studebaker, but it still shines on the salt.

    1937-1939 Talbot-Lago Figoni-Falaschi coupe
Teardrop or not, it's a sensual sensation.

His was chief designer at the time. I mean the back is called the "bangle butt."

    Do you know something different?

Are you kidding me? The E65 is probably Bangle's most infamous chassis design. The rear-end design was responsible for coining the term "bangle butt". So no, I don't "think" bangle was behind the E65 7-series, I know he was.

edit - EJ beat me to it!

I remember a slight roast session on Top Speed that involved Simon Cowell.

It's AMAZING what a restyle can do, look at the 2005 7 series and compare it to the 02-04, Like the 07 maxima, those designs are much better over the initial years.

All I've got to say is: Adrian van Hooydonk
    http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...2/b4005076.htm

"In fact, it was van Hooydonk—and not BMW Design Chief Chris Bangle—who penned the lines of the controversial 2002 7 Series and its provocatively heavy back end, since dubbed, erroneously, the "Bangle Butt." "

Still, Bangle was the one approving the designs at his position. Many of Bangles own designs are on the 7 series. They are also on the 5 and 6 series.

I believe that in this case, Hooydonk drew the actual car's lines while Chris added his touches. I doubt a man in as a high of a position as Hooydonk would go unnoted for those lines. It is also Hooydonk that will replace Bangle at BMW now.

Bentley finally divorced Rolls in 1998 and went under VW while RR went to BMW who was making their engines at the time.

Bentley has been much better under VW than they ever were under Rolls. BMW has also been quite successful with RR as the Phantom outsold the Maybach by more than 3 to 1 since release.

If Bangle designed the new line-up then all should be forgiven.

I despise the interior on most of the models in the last 6 to 8 years...and the awkward looking taillights and rear ends.

I was in a late e38 750IL with protection package the other day. Bullet proof glass and Kevlar shielding underneath...i'd say that car was the last quality 7-series. Researched them some and discovered they were available in 5 and 6 speed versions in Europe Screw that i-drive bs

As far as Hooydonk getting recognition: This is what happens with internet and forums, gossip gets blown out of proportion. In this case, Bangle took 100% of blame (or praise) for BMWs new direction, despite the fact that he's been head designer for nearly 20 years.

And yes Hooydonk will be replacing him so I doubt BMW's look will change for a while.
