    Default Laptop Question

My new Gateway laptop is doing something odd, and before I send it back in for service after having it for 2 weeks I wanted to see if there is anything else I can try that the idiots at Gateway cant think of.

My DVD drive wont play any DVDs or if I try to burn one it wont, No matter which I put in the drive it doesnt see the disc. I have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled, and the computer can see the DVDRW drive (It does list it as one of the drives) but when I put either a store bought DVD movie or a blank DVD media in it, It says there is no disc in the drive then ejects it. Anyone have any last minute ideas to fix it before I have to send this damn thing back?

    Thanks. btw running Vista Premium.

Burning wise, are you using DVD-R or DVD+R? Check which version your laptop uses. If it is one that it doesn't use, it won't recognize it.

I don't know why it wouldn't play regular dvds.

DVD drive is probably bad or not plugged in properly. Just return it and buy a HP.

Whats so odd is this morning I used this drive for the first time and it copied a DVD movie I was wanting to burn (So the drive worked at first) then when it was done and I put in the blank media the famous Microsoft blue fatal error screen came up and rebooted and since then any DVD or CD I put in the drive it wont even try and play, and if I go to the my computer and click the drive (Which it does see the drive) it ejects the drive door and says Insert media even though its in there

**** HP laptops. My pavilion laptop's LCD died literally right after the warranty ran out. We've had trouble with HP desktops before, and all their computers come with a ton of pointless crap installed from the factory.

If it stopped working after an error and a reboot, it most likely isn't a hardware problem. Call Gateway customer support and they will probably work you through the problem.

I did and all they can think of is sending it back in for repair. They were no help.

I tried system restore but when I try it from any point it can not finish it when it reboots it says it was not completed.

Well, there may be a lot more to this problem than just your CD/DVD drive not functioning properly if it won't even complete a system restore. If it was me, I would copy all important data from the hard drive and reinstall Windows, but it would probably be easier for you to just send it in to Gateway.

I really do think you should find a copy of Windows XP to install on it. Microsoft has officially backed down from Vista and has released new updates for XP.

My IT guy here at the office says the laser went out when it tried to start the burning process which is why I got the Fatal Error screen so I hope thats all it is and when I send it back the Gateway Tech put into notes for the techs to not reformat the drive just swap out the DVDR drive

that still isnt a reason for system restore to not complete the restore process.
