You only live once, maybe twice if you use the e-brake!
thats why you should use credit cards....it doesn't tie up REAL money and is easier to dispute b/c of CC guidelines.
Hmmm.... I was thinking about moving my accounts to GA Telco but I'm not sure after hearing this. I have had a few car loans through them but I may just keep my relationship with them limited to that. They have great rates.
Anyway, my debit card number was stolen 2 or 3 months ago. I have no idea how it happened, my card was in my purse and I don't use my debit card for online purchases. I use a credit card and then pay it back immediately for this very reason, security.
I guess it was one of those skimming devices in a gas station or ATM or some shady staff at a restaurant sicne that's the only place my card would ever leave my sight.
I check my account every day so I noticed it immediately when it was still a pending charge and had not even gone through. $110 to a restaurant in NYC. I called Wachovia and the money was back in my account in two days, had a new card in about 4 days, no holds on my account just a fraud watch. I signed an affidavit saying that I did not make the charges and that was that. Back to business as usual. I would say I'm more careful with my card but I have always been careful so there isn't much else to do other than watch your accounts very closely. Make it a habit to log on every morning just to be sure everything is as it shoud be. That's how I saved myself a lot of trouble.
Oh, and this will not effect your credit in any way unless the charges remain unresolved and they charge off the negative amount in your bank account. But your day to day activity in your bank account has nothing to do with your credit score.

x2...when my card was hacked into they caught it the night they started doing it, called me and asked if i verified those charges, cuz for some reason i decided to keep what i NEEDED in my checking account and i only had like $50 in there..they racked up like $500 in charges and i told them it wasnt mine, they refunded me...it took like half a year for things to be fully cleared. i hope they look out for youOriginally Posted by Spectic Tank
The crazy thing is that I never authorized or received any info about a visa card. I didn't know I even had that visa card and it never showed up on any statement.Originally Posted by JennB

I thought you said it was a debit card?
If it was a credit card, the money would not have been taken out of your bank account.

I never knew I had the separate visa card and didn't find out that I even had a card until yesterday

So it's a Visa debit card? (Visa Check Card) The card you use like cash or a check and money comes right out of your account.
That's not a credit card.

Oh snap. That's identity theft. You're going to need to monitor all three of your credit reports and have fraud alerts put on them. If they have enough of your information to open one card, they can open others.
I use Transunion's "True Credit" service to monitor mine. You can look at your reports and scores any time and they send alerts to your e-mail or phone as soon as anything changes or a new account is opened. I really like the service. I changed my address with my bank and credit cards about 2 weeks ago and had an alert in my e-mail within two days.

Someone stole my AMEX card and ran up $10,000 for two limos (I made a huge thread about it back then). I filed a report with both the police and my card company. I wasn't held accountable for any of it.Originally Posted by TIGERJC

Yes and no.Originally Posted by JennB
You can use it as a debt card and enter in your pin #. You can also use it as a "credit" card and sign for it. Both take it straight out of your account as you said, though.

"Credit" card by definition means you are issued credit by someone and the card is the means you use to spend that money. So whether you sign for it or use a PIN number, it still debits directly from your account and is a debit card.
I use my debit card like a credit card because I don't like using my PIN in public places, but my bank does not extend any credit for those purchases. The money is essentially gone as soon as the transaction is complete.
Good luck with getting this resolved. You need to contact the credit bureau's as soon as possible so they don't allow any more accounts to be opened in your name.
