				First of all, everyone benefits in our society from marriage for tax and insurance purposes.  Women "benefit" from marriage in the old fashioned sense in that they traditionally my not have to work.  I think that's less true with our generation.  i know I would benefit from marriage simply for peace of mind.  I think women look for security in men, not just monetarily but  for monogamy purposes.  Women, from my experience being a woman and having female friend discussions, seem to be more into relationships than a lot of men.  I think this is shaped partially by how our society has been groomed over the years and it just carries over to each generation.  That being said, women of today are a lot more independent...now that we have rights...and that may be why your teacher seems to think that women are less happy once they get married.  Maybe women feel empowered by independence and feel bogged down once they get married and have to take care of children and do family things. Even in today's times, women are the primary care givers of their children.  I can see how a woman can get used to doing her thing, maybe be in a power position at work, but she is expected to give that up to stay home with the children.
