    Yes Apple can do something about it. Under the Laws and Regulations for unlocking a phone, a phone can only be unlocked "for the sole purpose of using it with another provider." So it is legal to unlock a phone. BUT, not for the purpose that he's doing it for. The kid unlocked the phone the hard way. He did it some super long method that's not even worth it. There were 2 other teams, yea teams that unlocked the Iphone and made the unlocking a software base method, which means it's a lot easier.

    Apple already contacted them and told them not to release the software, OR ELSE

    I doubt Apple can do anything in this case....unless the company that now has the unlocked phone attempts to sell or market the phone then I dont see where Apple has any grounds for anything. The kids traded the phone ( sold it essentially ) but not as a commercial product. So long as no one tries to market the phone, everyone SHOULD be ok. Not that I am some expert.
