Default Help me select a new TV

I'm sick of the laser show my TV puts on every now and then. Plus my friends aren't going blind when I trick them into looking at it when it happenes. So, what's the most ballin TV on the market? I want to keep it small, so nothing bigger than 50".

Good idea on keeping it under 50 inch. At that point there is a huge jump in price. I've been looking at the Samsung LCD's. I wouldn't go plasma. Also you can get a really nice projection TV for a good price.

The Samsungs are great, and from what I've seen, read, and heard they are some of the best around. Just very very expensive.

For something that got great reviews for a great price, look into Olevia TV's. I got one for my mom, the first LCD/HD whatever, we've had and the picture is amazing. Most of the parts are from LG components, so despite it not being some top of the line well known name brand, it has the parts.

So, depending on your budget, that will detirmine what you should look at.

The Samsung is great though, and are really worth the money.

I could care less about the cost, I just want the best picture quality and reliability.

i have a 40" Samsung LCD. i got a helluva deal on it from Best Buy. the guy there said it was actually better than the comparable Sony (more/better hardware, but i can't remember the reasons he gave, something about a built in tuner or something or other, and something else). it looks great from any angle, and i've never had any problems with it whatsoever. but... i bought it at Christmas, so it's not exactly old.

Well samsung came out with a newer LCD tv so you can get the last generation ones (which are still amazing) for a great price. A 42 inch is about 2200 and the 46 is about 2400 give or take a couple hundred dollars.

sorry to say they lied to you.

if you wanna get one of the best out there period. get a sony xbr series. but the 52" is like 4k and the 46 is around 3k.

If you wanna get the best "value" tv meaning lower cost but still one of the best picture and reliability.

look into the toshiba HL167 series lcd's

    42" for around 1620.. 47" for around 2250. Great tv's great picture.

If you wanan spend more get a sony, and not a samsung. if you look at the samsungs picture everytime you mix brights and darkst he samsung screen gets all hazy and foggy. the DNIE processor seems to make the image look worse. on the tv's we have at work ive turned the DNIE enhancement off and they look better. the objects, people etc look more real with it off.

Also samsung boasts alot of dynamic contrast ratio but thats irrelevant. what you want to look at is native contrast. Native means in one frame.. one picture how many different shades of grey can the tv do.. the dynamic means what is the overall full range.

having a 8000:1 DR and a 1000:1 NR is pretty bad. ussualy the ratio is 5DR:1NR. again samsung loses out in this deparment.

You will hear that samsung and sony lcd panels themselves are manufactured at the same plant. they are. sony and samsung partnered in this, but the biggest factor in your picture quality will be the image processor. and Bravia > DNie by far. read it up anywhere you want.

The new HL167 series toshibas are also great as they utilize the sony WCG-CCFL backlighting panel. Orignially developed by NEC but now sony is the main developer. To give you an idea, a standard lcd can only range 70% of the color spectrum a human eye can see. the WCG-CCFL panels can range 90% +.

Also stay away from lg... their picture is very lacking and their reliability poor. The most reliable of all the major companies out there is toshiba. but its not a huge diff from toshiba to sony/pana.

Oh yeah the HL167 series from toshiba are 1080p sets with hdmi 1.3 ports. for the price of this tv you'd get a 720p sony/samsung with 2 non1.3 hdmi ports.

so yeah if u want the very best get a XBR2 or XBR3 from sony.. if u want the best value get the toshiba.

Meh, I've heard Samsung is alot better and that Sony hasn't been on top in this electronics battle like usual.

I too was suprised, but I've heard the 60in. Samsung, and seen that is the best quality and would be your best bet.

nah after 5 years you dont recharge them. but you just mostly throw them away. except for the panasonic plasma's. Granted they have a better contrast capability.. again i say that as their dynamic is high but their native is low. With gases heating/igniting alot of times the gases cant cool down fast enough to go from a bright scene one minute to a dark one the next. and yes most of us would never catch this as we'd have to be paying very detailed attention.. but its there. Also image burn is still an issue with plasma's and the reflective glass front i know is a turn off for many buyers having seen them say so myself. Also the 1080p plasmas are around quite a bit. panasonic has them from 42 to 58". but beware of the hitachi hd 1080 sets.. their false advertising.. They dony have a true 1080p resolution.. their at 1280x1080.. what bitches.

if its gonna be a plasma only get ap ana. longer lasting. lower power consumption and lowest heat output of any flat panel period.

whoever heard samsung is at the topwell.. see the problem here is

sony paid 80% of the factory costs.. samsung "owns" and operates it. as part of the agreement they would share some technology.. so now samsung uses the WCG-CCFL panel's also.. but again the bravia processor is the best one out there.

If anyones familiar with crt tv's.. trinitron.. nuff said.. the WEGA engine and BRAVIA engine have won the most awards WORLDWIDE.. i capd that because lg's only won awards in china.. samsung hasnt won alot in the US. etc.

Also i'll openly admits samsung does advertise their products very well. Their ad division's got some smart cookies. and sony never advertises..

Also whoever is looking for the tv.. if you really can tho wait..

WAIT. lol the xbr4 will be out in july.. and if u dont want a xbr4 in july.. the xbr3 and 2 will drop in price cus the new one will be out..

Actually if i rememeber someone had a 46" xbr3 for sale in the sale section here for 2100 that is a fukin steal man if its still there you should snatch that up.

thats a common misconception. I did a lot and i mean a lot of research and the plasma screens do not last 5 years, they last 12-17 just like a crt is rated for, or a LCD. 40,000-60,000 hours, and thats to HALF BRIGHTNESS, just like a crt unit. 30,000 hrs at 6 hrs a day is 13 years. Granted ill prolly keep my plasma for another 5 or 6 years before i buy the next best thing at that time, i can only handle a product like that for 5-6 years, then ill use it in my shop. My anti glare coating works very well, i dont get bothered by any glare at all, yeah, maybe in a store that has 100 halogen lights blaring down on them.

haha no. everyone ive talked to at the local best buys are retarded.

one guy spent 30 minutes trying to convince me *when they first came out btw* that HD dvd was 1080p and the blu-ray was 1080i.. he refused to believe me that despite showing him on the manufacturer spec sheets and pages of the products HE was selling that he was wrong..

    sigh..

btw the 40-60k hours your reading about is the "bulb" / light life span...

essencially ima sell you a car and say your motor will last 15 years + but your tranny only 6...

except in the plasma's.. and lcd's for that matter its not worth replacing the panel.. just buy a new one cus it would be cheaper.

well plasmas dont have bulb, they are essentially a hugely improved crt in the brightness and contrast sense. I had bought a DLP TV and it looked great, but i saw my uncles kid smack the front of his DLP TV and the bulb went out, i was like, AHHH FUCK THAT!!! 42" Plasma was nice and bright so i got it. Im ballin on a budget and dont really care at all for a 2500$ 1080p lcd that wont make me really say WOW. When they invent non pixle screens, then were talkin!!

well they have invented a type of non pixel screen but every company that had the rights to manufacture it had the liscense revoked.

well plasma's and lcd's dont have "bulbs" per say but they have a light source thus i said bulb/light.

again the wcg ccfl light source is a huge improvement over current standard sources.

but yeah the new techwill be amazing. the control's thecontrals the colors available are about 100x better than current top models. Also there is virtually no lag or reset timing. Aka you dont have to waitfor pixels to not get excited or for them to cool down. and then fire em back up again. its tough to explain but im sure by end of this year there will be alot more info on it out. which sucks cus the tv was supposed to be out later this year.
