The apollo missions didn't land at the south pole of the moon, and they didn't go as deep either. They picked that spot using methods you alluded to for other planets and moons, but it's not as obvious on ours as it is on those other places. So we are checking, there's no substitute for hands on. We did it with rovers on mars, and we're doing it with satellites on the moon.
