What's so crazy about it? Seems like a pretty good idea to me. If there is water under all the dust, crash something into it to stir up a lot of dust, fly another probe through the cloud to analyze it, get results.

ok so how will that benifit us,ok there is water on the moon, what then? will we have bottled moon water here on earth? waste of money and stupid to crash or blow anything up on the moon. the moon is kinda important to life on earth as we know it. but what the hell lets blow stuff up.

The explosions won't really affect the moon outside of stirring up some dust for a while. It definitely won't affect any life on Earth except for the lucky few people that are able to view the plume of dust with telescopes.

As it said in the article, finding water on the moon could be valuable for future space exploration. Why not find out more about the moon and space?

Was it stupid for us to land on the moon in the first place? What about the Mars landers? Are space telescopes stupid, too?

nope space exploration is not stupid, but blowing shit up on the moon is,we should be careful when playing with stuff like this .this is your opinion i respect that, but mine is this is foolish and should not be done.and im not saying it will blow up the moon either i just saying its a dangerous game to play.

the rocket will only impact it enough to leave a 50-90m crater, which there are plenty on the moon. if there is water on the moon, this will lead us to building a base on the moon and maybe even human settlements for extended periods of time which is a big boost for the human space flight plan which is currently predicted to end in 2011 .

no i dont think that i know more than nasa never said that, but it does not bother you that they are messing with the moon. it just a risky thing ot mess with you know, and yeah nasa makes mistakes take the challenger for an example.there are somethings we should leave alone and this is one of them.
if they wanna do something great they can use that money they are wasting on this and help fund projects or feed the hungry or help those less fortunate (in this country) but no they are looking for moon water, wow just wow....

What if the information gathered in this mission helps humans in the future colonize other planets once we have ruined Earth?

I think the money spent on feeding lazy poor people should instead go to the space program so my descendants can go on the perfect cruise at Fhloston Paradise.

hahahaha funny, in my mind we are never going to colonize any other planets that sci fi stuff. haaha nasa and the moon water mission, whats next a giant ice rocket to put out the sun hahaha ,this mission is a huge waste of $$$

I dont like it because it is a foolish precedence to set. First off I don't believe this is purely about water on the lunar surface. We observed mars from much further than our moon and saw signs of water. We have orbited the moon numerous times and have been able to survey the atmosphere, yet in order to tell on the moon, we have to send something explosive. We have landers that can dig deep enough to track water or ice and we have plenty of tools good enough to get another man on the moon.

I am also weird because I think there is more life in our solar system and we are making our way into space as the aggressors when we are taking the same destructive nature that is killing thousands of people per day out into the cosmos.

Call me a conspiracy theorists call me crazy, but I find it strange to celebrate the weaponization of space. And i believe that this is about that and not water on the moon.

People celebrated the creation of the nuclear bomb, now one of the greatest fears our planet is the fact that we have many people who are aching to use that which we have celebrated in the past, as a means to our own destruction.

    negative rep for human nature

It IS purely about water on the moon. I can bet that it is MUCH cheaper, easier, and faster to gather information by using the proposed method than developing a robot with diagnostic tools, safe landing mechanism, remote controls, etc., not to mention it doesn't put any humans in danger.

It really isn't celebrating the weaponization of space, it is the continuous search for knowledge about our surroundings. I am gonna try to wake up early in the morning to catch the live feed.

If there is something intelligent enough to monitor our mission to the moon this morning, they will probably laugh at our idea that is equivalent to putting a firecracker out there to see what shit flies up when it explodes. Far from intimidating or aggressive to a being that would have to have extremely superior technology.

Its all part of Obama's secret plan to put internment camps on the moon. Since Glenn Beck and Alex Jones busted his cock about FEMA, he's switched to NASA now. They are making sure theres water there so the camps will be able to support life long enough for the conservative detainees to be used as guinea pigs for the h1n1 vaccine. At which point you'll all be killed with some sort of death ray and your bodies used as organic compost for his crop of space-weed. Its all part of his plan to colonize the moon with marijuana to fund his secret militia of illegal immigrants that will be responsible for taking away everyone's guns.

Yep, if the aliens find us before we find them, they will obviously be the ones with better technology and better firepower. I doubt our ability to hit a big ass target like the moon from the Earth is gonna impress them very much if they are advanced enough for interstellar travel.

I would agree with that if I didn't know for a fact that we already have the ability to gather this information. For instance, you can go to the Sahara desert and get a sample of dirt and a sample of the atmosphere and know that this planet has water. We knew Mars had water LONG before we went there, and we have visited the moon. Do you honestly think that they did not examine the atmosphere or lacking there of, and examine the soil enough to know whether or not there was water. We even know of water on moons of other planets and we haven't had to crash anything into them...

BTW. You do realize that the water thing was a part of one of the apollo missions...and you can look those objectives up. I can't remember which mission, but I saw them but they are public knowledge.

And whether or not something intelligent is monitoring it or not and their response depends on the nature of that intelligence. If we are talking about some sort of peaceful society then we sent a strange message when they observe this. If it is a hostile society then we potentially become marked targets, much like Iran is developing weapons in a world that loves confrontation and many other countries are considering pointing guns at them.

either way...I believe the water objective is bogus.

...on another note...anyone see anything interesting when it happened?

we did not find water on the apollo missions. it has only been suggested there is water there under the surface. we found very limited data of hydrogen and did not know what form it was in like water or some other hydrogen compound. This is going to give us some real data to make conclusions about h2o.

i think they only showed the onboard cameras on impact this morning. pics of the plume and dust from telescopes and the ISS should be released later today.

Well think about it, dude. The moon is a dangerous place full of terrorists. No wonder they bombed it. Heck, 62% of americans 'prolly think we should invade the moon and clean out the Al Qaeda operatives.

The apollo missions didn't land at the south pole of the moon, and they didn't go as deep either. They picked that spot using methods you alluded to for other planets and moons, but it's not as obvious on ours as it is on those other places. So we are checking, there's no substitute for hands on. We did it with rovers on mars, and we're doing it with satellites on the moon.
