Raul Castro should love it. he can let the foreign capital into the country, then he can do what his brother did and simply confiscate it again.

Cuba has nothing to offer the US and even most Cubans are against this. What does that tell you? Once the Castro's are out of power, this can be re-visited, but not until then.

Cuba was the largest importer of American cars up untill the revolution. Most of these cars are still on the road today, and the Cubans are in desperate need of replacement parts. Since we have tons of spare parts but a dwindling supply of original cars, theres a great potential for trade.

Not to mention sugar... which is the crop we were getting from them before the revolution and the crop that has been sustaining them since then.

possibly the opening of drug traffiking since they want to slow down the business of drugs with Mexico. (just a thought)

i think it is a good idea - if you have family there you could only visit them 1x every 3 years. i think it is a smart move and obviously years of failed policy - we can use all of the allies we can get in the world and opening possible efforts will help our cause on this side of the world.

Even though the US embargo was implemented and is still there mostly as an opposition against the Castro regime, it might be having the exact opposite effect; once you get rid of it, Americans will inevitably going to rush there for tourism (its a beautiful island and has very interesting history specially from the American point of view, tourism is expected to double or triple if the borders are opened) and start doing business (11 million people only 50 miles away is a pretty significant market). This "Americanization" will put enormous pressure on the Castro regime. After 10 years or so, the US would probably have their economy by the balls, I don't see how the communist regime would survive.

This is just my opinion, but maybe thats what Obama has in mind?

I agree, and those of you saying Cuba has nothing to offer other than cigars really have no clue.

How ignorant. Why don't you do some research first on a country before assuming.

Cuba has rich soil that can produce anything from Banana's, Coconuts, Sugar Cane, Coffee, etc.

Cuba has good cigars, coffee, rum, etc.

They are definitely able to sustain themselves with trade if not for the current regime.

they are also doing very very well in tourism with Europeans, especially Germans. They already have the hotels and the products in place. If the borders were opened, it can easily become the next Cancun.

I would love to be able to go to Cuba, those beaches are beautiful, and the simple fact that it would be somewhat of a time warp to go there. All of those old cars driving down the road would be a view to die for. Plus like mentioned before they have some very fertile soil and trade with them would help both sides.
Hey do me a favor real quick jump back into the gene pool i have some chlorine tablets i wanna try out!!!!!!

It's a small step towards a positive outcome. Any step in the right direction is a good one.

Now if we could only bomb Venezuela....
