Cuba was the largest importer of American cars up untill the revolution. Most of these cars are still on the road today, and the Cubans are in desperate need of replacement parts. Cuba has rich soil that can produce anything from Banana's, Coconuts, Sugar Cane, Coffee, etc.
Cuba has good cigars, coffee, rum, etc.
They are definitely able to sustain themselves with trade if not for the current regime.
they are also doing very very well in tourism with Europeans, especially Germans. They already have the hotels and the products in place. If the borders were opened, it can easily become the next Cancun.
