Would you rather take a paycuts so everyone can keep their jobs or your company lay people off?

i chose layoffs b/c i'm fortunate enough that out sourcing me is too expensive and there isn't anyone here who is able to do what i do so i feel pretty secure... i know if we took pay cuts that layoffs still could be in the future. that's my outlook. (luckily my company is doing good; i just heard this on the radio and figured i would pass it on to IA)

i wish i went into networking or nursing right now. i mean, i got into something i wanted to do, but now i'm being highly effected by the economy, pretty much directly. theres no telling whats in store for our company. its small and isnt branching out that much to different states, its pretty much staying local except for one or two projects, i know of one in Ohio and another in NC
Well, as a preventive measure, our CEO froze all pay increases this year. I am pretty sure that I was getting a raise, but i'd rather freeze pay as opposed to laying good people off. Though it would be nice if they cut the lazy ass dead weight employees.
i think most companies of 20+ employees always has dead weight that can be cut...Originally Posted by AirMax95

I have one sitting near me now, lol.
This is a good thread but I would add what has happen to you or fellow friends in the workplace.
I think I would want a pay decrease, instead of a layoff.
But in our warehouse our staff has been literally cut in half. Same as our sales too. Our company froze all matching 401k Contributions and will be
cutting back our health insurance even more.
My brother who works in a tile warehouse his pay was cut from $16 to $13 dollars and plus a handful of people layed off.
My company has not experienced any threatening economic whoes. A few of our small customers have cut back on cylinder and hardgood orders, but the big boys are still doing business as usual (hospitals, universities, industrial plants, etc.)
I applaud our CEO and management team for making sure that if shit hits the fan, the blow will be lessened becuase we have not shelled out cash.
Layoffs are better and heres why
The businesses work best when they are efficient, cutting peoples pay to keep jobs only keeps mediocre people in the workplace. If you use layoffs to get rid of people that arent cutting it or have needless jobs, you are in effect stream lining you business to be more efficient and profitable.
Pay CUTS in essence tries to even everyones pay, and that is not the way to keep the TALENT in your business.
Usually layoffs affect the people that:
1) Make way too much money (i use this LIGHTLY)
2) you lay off people that have jobs that perform subpar work, or are in jobs that can be consolidated
I hate to use this as an example but look at Wallstreet. We NEED people that make MILLIONS because they are the best at what they do, running a company. Now some arent that good and dont deserve the pay, but there are very good people out there that deserve to be rich and make alot of money. If you start trying to equalize everyones pay, you get underqualified people in jobs, or people that dont want the responsibility because the pay isnt worth it.
Like nationalizing health care, watch what happens when we start telling doctors what they can charge, and mark my words there will be a drastic reduction in doctors in this country.

It depends on the company and how large the layoffs are. Both sides of the argument are valid. If it's a relatively small cut then you can get rid of the the bad performers. If it's a large cut then some good, but somewhat expendable, people will be cut also. An employee would opt whichever based on where they think they stand in the company, see my personal reasoning below...
It also depends on the specific job and pay rate. Some jobs are overpaid and need lower pay for the benefit of the company, GM's unionized workforce is a good example.
Another point is that a company may need a labor force of a certain size to make enough of a product to meet the demand. In this case cutting the pay would be better for the business. Efficiency isn't just measured on the individual worker. If two identical businesses cut equal costs through both methods, the one with the larger workforce will most likely have greater efficiency. (measured by total output divided by cost) Neither is really better, because it is company specific. Hence, all companies don't just pick one. And sometimes it's best for them to do both.
I voted pay cut because it would benefit me the greatest. I'm a college student. I have a great job and make good money for someone my age, especially for being in school. I also get to study at work and spend time on the interwebs. I'm among the youngest in the company and have less experience than almost everyone here. I'm a good performer but I still consider myself near the bottom of the food chain. For that reason I would rather take a pay cut than risk being layed off.
I would ask for a bailout, fire thousands, give my execs HUGE bonuses for running my company into the ground, then sue the US government for questioning me.
I can do this busness sh!t!!!!

paycuts all day.
I have to go with layoffs. It sucks for the employees that do get laid off, but when you look at the company it saves much more in the long term.
More cuts in unemployment insurance
more cuts in workers comp insurance
then with larger companies you have HUGE cuts in dental and medical insurance coverage.
Those insurances alone will save more than simple wage cutbacks and I didnt even get into the actual wages saved.
Layoffs might be better in the long run... I am saying paycut ,cause who would want to get laidoff? I wouldn't want to loose my job to "take one for the team" ie: our economy, lirl.
Id go with paycuts. Even though some of you say its better for the company to layoff. But I don't believe in corporatism.
Laying off for sure!
