If there is an innovation, but I seriously doubt there will be large enough of one to make us independant of foreign oil, not to mention oil completely. To be completely independant of oil would mean the end of plastics and every other petroleum based material we use.

Phase 1 of pulling out of this needs ot be producing our own oil though. Contrary to the liberal belief system, you can work on alternative fuels while benefitting from the ones we currently have. There is no alternative power source other than nuclear that can even start to replace oil. Wind, solar and geothermal are far too inefficient to use on a large scale. NG would raise the price of NG to a point that it would out of reach for most people. Electric, we you need something to power those batteries from so thats out. Ethanol, well, just look at how inefficient it is. It takes more energy to produce it than it creates. On top of that only an idiot would use food for fuel.
