Cannabis Issues Dominate Obama's "Open for Questions" Website

President Elect Obama is known for reaching out beyond the beltway to take the pulse of the nation. His website, Change.gov offers all of us the chance to communicate our hopes, dreams, fears and needs. This is governance from the ground up, the way it was meant to be. A new program just instituted on the website, is one where citizens may pose specific questions, and others can vote on their importance, bringing significant questions to the top of the list.

In the short twenty four hours the “Open for Questions” segment of Obama’s change.gov website actually stayed open, 7300 questions were posted, 10,000 people participated and 600,000 votes were cast for the most important issues on people’s minds. Guess which question had the most votes?

"Will you consider legalizing marijuana so that the government can regulate it, tax it, put age limits on it, and create millions of new jobs and create a billion dollar industry right here in the U.S.?"

I'm not to concerned about it since it recently became decriminalized where I live now. . ounce and under = $100 fine

But I doubt it will be legalized in the "Bible Belt" anytime soon

Mass and Mich are now Decriminalized states as of the last election

and the vote was pretty much 51% were for the decriminalization 19% undecided and 32% not for it. Just shows people are getting fedup w/ it being a Felony charge over something that is less lethal compared to Alcohol

Yep. It was cool watching her do the interview in a backyard amongst cannabis bushes. Those were some thick plants. I also liked how she trried to point the finger at the feds like it was their fault that the "Green Triangle" was a marijuana based economy and the feds said, "No its not." If it was legalized it would only benefit the economy.

too many drug dealers. how many people grow tobacco and sell cigarrettes? not many. a lot of ppl grow weed and sell it; and the gov't will never be able to tax them.

A lot of people used to make liquor and sell it. Some people still do but now that you can go down to the corner store and get a 5th of Mr. Boston for less than $10 its really not worth it.

I imagine that if they made marijuana legal and corporate America were able to produce it in mass quantities it would be much the same. The product wouldn't be as potent and the profit margin would drop, but it would still be a huge market.

I mean in theory you can grow anything, but in practice how many people grow their own food? Probably less than 5% of the general population cultivate vegetables for their own consumption. Its just a given that there are some things people don't want to work for when they can buy them for less money than the effort it takes to produce them at home.

if they grew high quality shit and sold it affordably... i bet it would put dealers out of business. what makes weed so expensive now is the fact that its illegal. if you had the government growing and distrubuting the cost would be reduced. and plus... more money for farmers

What about supply and demand? You actually think that drug dealers would still be able to sell for, say $80-$120 a 1/4oz still? I dont think so. They wouldnt be able to compete with the government and big companies creating such a large influx in the market.

i bet most people don't realize that most oils and plastics used to be made from hemp. the first model T was made from hemp. so were clothing, paper, fabrics, plastics, and oils. it was pushed into the darkness when DOW(the chemical company) and others saw it as a threat to their chemicals they made. before the 1930's and earlier it was practically illegal to not grow it. if we were to use hemp paper today, we would save a shit load of trees and the same plot of land could be used over and over again. all in all it would be a good thing and would have many uses, but if it's legalized it would hurt certain giant corporations bottom line.
