Default So how are we NOT fucked

Over dinner last night, with some really smart people I'm honored to call friends, during conversation, the question was posed - "Tell me how we, as a country, are not fucked."

Someone mentioned our President Elect and his shaping cabinet and administration. Another mentioned the two wars - if only to mention that our engagements, and monetary obligations to which, are going to minimize drastically in the coming years.

Then the room got quiet. And suddenly, we as a collective group of smart kids, who, throughout our lives have confidently had the answers, suddenly didn't.

This was followed by some nervous squirming. "I - I - think the capital influx into the market shows some confidence in our ability to recover over time," said the financial analyst.

... but he said it in a way that sounded rehearsed, as if it's the thing he's told his girlfriend, worried parents, and maybe even himself, late at night, when the sweat beads of worry wash over his face.

All the while I'm thinking I can't wait to post this here as a thread.

Think it over. Don't be reactionary. Get to a quiet place and dig deep. Try not to quote things you hear from other people or news outlets (as I've just done.. Doh!).

    Whats' your gut say?

Most of you cunts on this board were fucked the day they came out the chute, so whats the difference now?

The correct answer is simple. No we are not fucked. There is no giant "we." The exceptional will remain exceptional - the proles still proles. You will just see some fakers from the former end up in the latter where they always belonged. That ain't nice, but it's true. Pass the wine, faggot.

we nhave yet to see what direction Obama will take with his admin. As I have said before, if he continues moving to the center we will be fine and he will simply be an effectual president. If he moves back to the far left, with the help of congress, he will spend this country into a hole 3 more Bushs couldnt come close to.

Dont get me wrong and call this hating Obama, even though I do. Either Obama or McCain would have been ineffectual as a president. There are simply too many fronts that must be adressed with the same, limited funds.

Neither had any plans that would have any positive effect on the economy. Obama lacked any real plan for energy, McCain wanted to drill more, but nothing else. We could go on all day with this and never get anywhere with it.

dont forget his bank accounts. When he dumps a bunch of cash into the FM's, they will pay him back in the same manner they did with Barney Frank.

Lemme try this again. We're not fucked, because Americans are too lazy to not buy unnecessary bullshit. We don't even know how to not buy unnecessary bullshit. We'll even buy shit in efforts to save money. We've just slowed down a little bit for the time being, and look at the panic. It just shows we are a consumerist society, and as soon as people get a few bucks back, they are going to spend them immediately. That's what we do.

barfmachine, one of your buddies mentioned the election. Obama's Presidency so far has been a real disappointment imo. Although it's too early for him to do anything and I understand that he's not going to be in office til early next year but still. I mean, seriously he hasn't done shit yet, wtf.

And no one make a lazy nagger joke. Okay? This thread is a place for intellectual conversation full of Einstein reincarnations and we shouldn't pollute it with nonsense.

But to answer your question, again. I doubt we're as fucked as a lot of people assume we are.
If you're smart and know how to manage your money then I don't see why you should be worried. Unless of course you're in a position in your life where every dollar bill should be kept in a safe next to your food stamps. Then you really are fucked.

Up and downs, positive and negative, ying and yang. Until someone puts a dick in your ass you are not fucked.

i remember when there was always a discussion about president bush's doings as president, and people on IA always said "the president doesnt do anything" " its not the presidents fault". and when it changes hands to the opposition.. its the end of the world.

I can understand being a little skeptical. "if it aint broke dont fix it" has always been a respected saying. Well! America is broke!, and it needs to be fixed...our traditional ways have got us to were we are.

...Ok a few things that have to be cleared out:

    Define 'Fucked':

Fucked implies, among other things, currency breakdown, economic/employment impacts at or higher than GD (Great Depression) levels, with no clear path to recovery.

To clarify also, the broader point is: Are we ON OUR WAY to being fucked.

Today things are interesting. Are we en route to Fuckedville? If you want to expand, what's the best way out?

Do we drive or walk? Who gets to go?

You can even dig deeper - Who HAS to stay in Fuckedville for the rest of us to leave?

To those of you who are wondering, I'm withholding my true thoughts until at least 2 or 3 more pages in.

One of the best posts and truest posts I've seen in this section period. Those who were always exceptional see the opportunity.. those who never were make threads like these.

edit: Thats no knock to the OP, but moreso those who are oh so worried.

Tony just gave props to my post! That's awesome!

See tony it goes like this. Depending on peoples' response to certain situations - you can pretty much guess everyones' financial success.

"Who cares? Wall Street had it coming to them." = Poor.
"We're screwed, so I'm going to whine or hole up and wait." = Middle class.
"We are not all fucked. I will be fine, people that have brains and balls will do fine." = Successful.

Of course everyone is still going to worry no matter their situation. No one wants to go broke.

Seriously though, and this is coming from a wetback who's life has always been about work work work. How can we be fucked if we got a warm place to sleep? No ones kicking our doors down and raping or killing you for your thoughts or politics. How about those grocery stores full of food you dont have to grow or kill? We have roads that are smooth and safe with lamps on the side for light on dark areas. How about access to education or free money in the form of welfare or when you're not working? How about that little rule of law thing, how about the police comming to your aid or that fire department on the corner or the hospital and doctors?

Fucking whiny bunch of complaining little bitches. That's why our parents' generation laughs at us because we are so spoiled.

If people can't see how good we actually have it and how lucky we are, how unfucked we are compared to most who have ever lived on this planet.
Then they are seriously fucking blind.

i honestly dont think that we are fucked. the things that we are going through is something that we as a country have gone through many times. We went through a financial panic in the late 1800's, we went through one with the depression, and we are going through one now. the only reason it looks as bad as it does is because of popular culture. we as a society have been taught to believe what we are told by the bigger. so many of us pay too much attention to things like the news when you all know for a fact that they are not going to report the whole entire part of the story, they just report what gets them ratings and viewers. if we as a people would actually do our own research and find out things for ourselves we might actually do good as a society instead of believing what we are told.

back on topic. i had to rant for a second. i do not believe we are fucked as a society, as a world, what ever you want to call it. Our world economies have become so embedded into one another that if one fails, we all fail. More specifically, if our country, fails, it would have more impact on the entire world then any other country failing. we as a society have some of the brightest mines that exist on this planet. we are the ones that have come up with many of the things that allow the worlds societies to exist. i honest can not believe that we as a country will fail. we are just going through a reform, we as a country are trying to re-establish our identity as a world power. what is happening is nothing new, its something that has happened many times before.

    i hope that made sense

Heres my only knock to the state and the future of the Economy.. the arrogance of big business. It has nothing to do with the presidency in my mind, even if John McCain was elected I wouldn't sit here and say we're fucked.

When companies like Honda can turn a profit every year dating back to the 60's and NEVER have to lay off a single employee then continue to innovate.. I'm sorry I have no sympathy for the likes of Ford, GM, and Chrysler. All that we are going through is a market correction, people were gaining wealth off of wealth that didnt exist and now the rug is being pulled from under them.

There is just as much opportunity today as there was 10 and 20 years ago.. possibly more. Times are tough but far from impossible.

exactly, i remember watching something the other day on one of the news programs where it had a person that was defending the Detroit auto industry and why they had to lay off people. i personally dont see why they would have to do if they didnt run their business right. the commentator brought up to the man that why is it that you have foreign companies that produce cars in this country that dont have to lay off people and are doing just fine and you have the american motor companies that have lay off thousands, is that not because of poor business practice. thats what irritates me, they are so arrogant that they dont want to admit that they are at fault.

you guys should just go to the obama site, and actually read his policies.. and you will see, Obama is just the black version of Bush. I would know, I had to do a research on policies on both Obama/McCain (both are 90% identical).. especially, foreign policy. RON PAUL homies!

The difference in the 2 goes no further than the UAW. The pay and benefit packages for the average employee is at Honda or Toyota is only 40% that of a UAW worker. To account for this and to keep their prices competitive they must draw back somewhere. It is mostly being done in the quality of components used to build a vehicle. Not until you get into the luxery lines can you find a vehicle built with quality components.

I agree. Pretty much everyone I know that has the cash to do it is dropping it into their 4012k's or into the markets and picking up some very good stocks for extremely cheap. When the market decides to rebound, alot of people are going to make a ton of money.

    Want to be successful?

Do what your Grandparents told you:
Save your money, go to school, get good grades, then, once you enter the workforce you get up early, stay up late, think smart and work hard.

    Or be a rockstar...

We as a nation are not fucked. We are just going through a period of our lives where we only care about flat screens and xbox 360s and shit.

It will all fade away sooner or later...
