The majority of the people that are, or get into, this hobby, start from scratch and do not buy cars already done. That's where a lot of resentment comes in. Just to elaborate a little. Its not only the fact that someone put the mods on the car on their dime. Its the fact that it is someone elses idea and concept. Nothing wrong with starting with a car like that but I think most people would agree it needs to be re-worked so that it is your sons idea. Removing all the decals, new kit, wheels, and paint would be a huge step in the right direction of making it his car. Good luck with the project.
