The point is that you're trying to "suck up" so that the court will have mercy on you. When you go to a lawyer for a traffic offense (speeding, reckless etc) they will tell you to go take a defensive driving course and it's almost guaranteed that the judge will give you community service so why not just go ahead & do it do show him that you are sorry.
