    Default wow...what the mother fuck...

    Aight, so I took my engine to doctor dug to get the valves checked and adjusted if need be. Exhaust valves were all over the place. So I told him to take the head off and do what he had to do. Found the chain was in not so good shape, big deal..and that all 8 exhaust valves were fucked. I haven't spoken to him, just got a VM. Supposedly the valves are $86 a PIECE?!?! Are you fucking kidding me. So it's gonna cost 700 bucks JUST for valves? Wow. I can buy a whole fucking engine for 700-1000..with a trans!

    has anyone heard of shit like this happening? I dont see how my valves went bad from nothing. I have to call him in a bit, im just kinda pissed.

    I don't know iwhats up with your valves, but if it is cheaper to drop a new engine in it, then definitely do that and sell the old engine to mitigate your costs. Post up on the WERA forum... lots of people with lots of experience troubleshooting engine trouble.

    I have not heard of all 8 exhaust valves being bent from a bike running properly prior to teardown.

    What type of valves did he price you? I don't understand why all 8 valves would be bent and the bike still run properly, I bent one of the exhaust valves on my old YFZ and it ran like crap.

    That being said $86 a piece for valves isn't bad if their titanium, my CV4 Xceldyne's I run in my race quad cost me around that with my discount. If you can get me specs on the valves I can see what I can do about getting you a better price but can't promise anything.

    Wow Yamahas are super reliable. I don't know how you could have 8 bad valves and a bad chain and not have a bike that rode like shit. That's very weird. I'd get another motor. Actually I don't know what I'd do b/c I wouldn't be able to afford either. I could spend my money elsewhere. Man sorry to hear that. I don't want to knock your mechanic but that's just kinda crazy!!

    Ok, this is what he told me. The valves are titanium with a hard protective coating on the outside of them. The coating is starting to come off and sinking into the head. $86 a valve. I asked if there were aftermarket stainless steel or hardened steel valves but he cannot find any. I don't know where to look for parts like that. He supposedly does and can't find any for the R6. GRRRREAAATTTTTTTT.

    If it was me I would put a R1 Motor on it!! some custom work but can and has been done!!

    Damn that sucks ant... My thoughts were first owner ran it low on oil...then it started amking noise..Sold it to you.. you fixed what you thought was wrong . only it was worse than thought. If valves are bent it will make the rike run like poop , but finish being worn is another story..

    Doug will get it fixed up....

    So, did he originally tell you that they were bent, or not? Either you misunderstood him, or he has changed his story.

    Also, call other shops to see if this is a normal issue. I have not heard of it before - but I do not have an R6.

    If you need vavles - check with Graves.

    No sir. He never said they were bent. Just was unclear in his voicemail. I spoke to him and he said the coating was coming off and sinking into the head. He did say my timing chain was kinked and i had to purchase a mechanical tensioner to tighten the chain up b/c it would make a ton of noise upon starting it up.

    I would suggest you call Huey at Marietta Motorsports, and Rob at MSP Cycle and ask them what they think.

    Why I have heard and seen this first hand.....With the money it would cost and know telling what your motor has been through with the other owner..I would get a new motor off ebay or a known junk yard

    I haven't had this problem with any of my R1s, so I would suggest that before he goes and spend $700 on valves, that he does a little research. How hard is it to call a couple of shops?
    I don't see lots of R6 owners posting that they need vavles on the R6 forum, so it's not too common.
    It could be a legit problem, or not. If it is, it's expensive, and yes, another motor should be cheaper - but you also don't know that the new motor won't have the same issues.

    R1 and R6 is completely different engines...... And they did have a problem , but not saying it was a recall but did have a issue....Most likely the other owner either beat the shit out of it , and maybe rode it so rough it was starving for oil , or drained the oil and rode with no oil, what ever the case is.....What is done is done nothing he can do but fix it....Making calls is not going to get his bike fixed....

    Same thought i had....... most likely caused by a oil issue from user error
    . I think hes luckey..A loy of people would have over looked the problem...

    Calling shops to check can tell him the likelyhood of the mechanic telling the truth. There are a lot of shady people out there. Not saying that the person that he took it to is shady, but what harm is it to get a second opinion? If your doctor was telling you that you needed an expensive surgery to replace your lung, would you get a second opinion? Personally, I would at least do some research if I wasn't 100% sure that he was correct already. That's all I am saying.

    It's Doctor Dug btw.

    I have a friend interested in buying it for what I owe on the bike. I might go that route and just get another lower mileaged bike that was better taken care of. I babied this bike and changed the oil before requirements, but that isn't going to fix some1 elses lack of responsibility.

    I won't start anything w/ another member of the forum but David88vert said it best!! I would definitely get a second opinion on that. I was up at Marietta Motorsports and Huey had 3 R6s in the shop all track bikes. I asked him about them having problems like yours and he said he'd never seen anything like that. He also said they're very strong motors that's 1 of the reasons why people use them as track bikes. He said they take a beating very well. One the R6s he said the owner wrecks a lot and rides it both street and track. I don't know.

    I would have loved for my boy Zack to look at the motor beforehand. He's a Yamaha specialist. He races and builds R1/R6s and has 2 race R6s. 1 built and one for superstock.

    lol......People its not like he dropped it off at Jerry Bobs shop.The guy who has it is not shady , he also is not hurting for $..... The fact he told Ant " i can put it back together and itll run " says hes not trying to just get money...... The bike has had other problems that would lead me to belive it was a oil problem and or user error... Yes he could take it to this guy or that guy and be out another 100$ or more just to be told the same thing.. Dr. Doug is a geico certified repair shop.... Not like he works out of a barn...

    I know everyone is trying to help but the way to help now is help this guy find valves cheap..... I know r6 motors are VERY good motors but it only takes one time of running low on oil for a second to do what has been done....
    Not trying to jump anyones shit , just clearing things up....

    Im glad he took it there as most shops would have missed this and just got the valave adjustment done to get it out the door and get paid.....

    I also know THE BIKE WAS RUNNING BAD....We raced with me on my 2001 f4i and it took him till 5 gear to pull on me and it was a VERY slow pull.. Thats not right....That r6 should leave my f4i wayyyyy back

    i have had many r6's and never had a problem even when i did a mild buld on it and made big hp # to the wheel on race gas. ran it for a year and no problems. yes the yamaha's do have TCT issues but normally are good for at least 10k. what was your original problem?

    22-24k miles on her.

    He found out that in my year, 2006, when this was the new model, some of them have valve numbering differences. (Now I am not 100% on my terminology or any of my info. Just giving you what I sorta remember to give you an idea of what he was talking about). Instead of the valves being numbered, lets say 1-2-3-4, mine were number 2-3-1-4 Or something along those lines. He mentioned this to me as I was standing front of him when he first started check the clearances. Weird.....
