I had a similar problem with my car when I swapped in a B-series. With my issue, the bolt that holds down the ground wire on the wire harness on the thermostat housing had come loose. Once, I tightened it down, the problem went away.

Also, check out the wiring behind the cluster and the "servo" which controls the needle.
