    Default Small block 350 ?'s

Ive done the whole honda thing and now i want to build a nice older truck. Im new to v8's. Anyone got any good sites to check out for info? Like whats better 2 bolt main, 4 bolt main. Crate vs. Rebuild a junkyard motor. hydraulic lifter, solid lifters.

Any help will get you reps

    4 bolt main is better
crate is better if you can afford it
hydraulic and solid depends on the cam you want to run in it really

Yep. You will see higher prices on 4 bolt engines than the 2 bolt.

Unless you get a high performance or one thats not very old then it will have an iron block already. I dont know when the switched to aluminum but if your going carb'd 99% of all were iron block.

I'd try to get a mid 80's truck block, most trucks had 4 bolt mains(they also had 305's make sure you get a 350). The solid lifter vs. Hyd. lifter also depends on your budget, solid is alot cheaper . I'm going with a 350 bored .030 over with 6 in. rods and a 3.480 stroke crank and a flat tappet cam with soldi lifters with my junkyard rebuild. Heads are better to get aftermarket if you want power (vortecs are nice but req. the vortec intake and such), then a good intake and 4 brl. carb and you should be good to go. Also the iron block is fine, but I'd get Aluminum heads.

2 bolt mains converted to a 4 bolt main is a lot better than a straight 4 bolt main. Also if I were in your shoes I would just go ahead and build it yourself. Much more satisfying and you know exactly what is done to it and the quality of work done into it(unless you have no clue what your doing). Also do a stroker, if your patient you can find a great deal on stroker parts, hell they are pretty cheap new also.

The stroker parts usually cost just a hair more then the other parts anyways, might as well buy them if you're looking for performance.

Personally, I would go with a small block rather than a big block any day of the week. Alot of people go with sb350 but I like sb400. I would build it myself, how I want it before I bought a crate motor. An old used chevy block isn't hard to find at all and it will probably be a tad cheaper depending on what exactly you're wanting to get out of the motor. And as stated above, might as well go ahead and build a stroker. For the few extra bucks, you get better HP. As for 4 bolt or 2 bolt, my dad and I have always went with 4 bolts. Always been pleased. Goodluck with whatever you decide to do.
