Default NEW QUESTION about rx7 exaust

ok so after some research, i have no idea what would be better. the racing beat downpipe/presilencer combo; or the header/presilencer combo. i have a 91 feul ingected and they say the downpipe/presilencer combo if not upgrading the intake---but i dont want to make it carbarated like they (racing beat) seem to sugest. so after looking for an intake i dont really see anything that i think would make much of a difference from the factory with a K&N. so if i am not going carbarated, which is the best combo. racingbea.com says the downpipe/presilencer combo is the best...but if i put a K&N in can i assume that is "upgrading" the intake system. (sorry prolly a stupid question) again i am looking for a nice daily driver...all i am doing is the exaust/intake and the suspension.

on a side note i can get all 3 of the above pieces for less than one piece cost off of racingbeat.com so i am think of buying all 3 and then deciding but i wanted input

    thanks again

yes... downpipe. Sounds like the one you are describing is resonatoed or silences.. which means it should have just a small abount of baffles in it.

When you want more are flow and don't care about noise level, we put on the 3" straight pipes all the way out

A downpipe is for turbo cars. A header is for naturally-aspirated cars. Since your car is NOT a turbo, you cannot put a downpipe.

yeah david that is what i thought but if you look at this link they just call it a downpipe (this is half the reasion i was asking the question) so again if i am misunderstanding this let me know.

    link

    http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda2.htm

read they refer to the cat replacment pipe as the downpipe

also this link off same page says it is for 1989-91 RX-7 Coupe Non-Turbo (equipped with Manual Transmission)

edit links dont work but here is a copy of hte page

The 1986-92 13B 6-port engines, in stock form with the factory fuel injection, produces similar power gains with either our Header/Presilencer combo or our Cat Replacement Pipe (Downpipe) /Presilencer combination. If you have no intentions of installing our Holley intake System (or any other aftermarket carb setup), we recommend the use of the Cat Replacement Pipe (Downpipe) /Presilencer combo since it offers a slightly quieter exhaust note, is easier to install and is less costly. If you are intending to upgrade the intake or fuel injection system, the Header/Presilencer combo offers the greatest performance potential.

    Cat Replacement Pipe (Downpipe)

Will the Racing Beat Cat Replacement Pipe (Downpipe) replace only the cat converters?
The cat replacement pipe connects to the factory exhaust manifold, and the presilencer connects to the factory Y-pipe, replacing all catalytic converters and intermediate tubing. It is not possible to use just the Racing Beat downpipe to replace only the catalytic converters. The use of the Racing Beat presilencer is required to complete the connection to the y-pipe. Although a short length of tubing can be substituted in place of the presilencer, we so not offer (or suggest) this due the unacceptable increase in exhaust noise.

Which Cat Replacement Pipe/ Presilencer combo do I need?
Racing Beat offers a variety of components for the 1986-92 RX-7s that are intended for a specific application. The 1986-88 RX-7 (non-turbo) utilizes exhaust back pressure to operate the 6-Port actuators on the intake manifold. Selected Racing Beat presilencer units include a pickup tube that will provide the correct pressure to operate the actuator valves.

A cat-replacement pipe is called a mid-pipe, or sometimes called a test pipe. A downpipe bolts to the back of the turbo. You do not have a turbo. The 2 systems that they show on that page are for 2 different cars.

On your car, you want to get the header. The exhaust manifold is really restrictive. They are calling the an adapter pipe a downpipe on that page, but that is not a very good description. Causes confusion. Get the header, use the stock cat for now, and get the catback. Later you can get a Random Tech high-flow cat.

Exhaust is where you make your power on the rotary. The ONLY reason that you would stay with the stock exhaust manifold is if you just want to keep the car quiet. Headers will make it louder.
