    sounds like something is stuck in your pressure plate. does your clutch have a sprung hub (does it have dampening springs?) sometimes one of the springs will come apart and get stuck in the teeth of the pressure plate, which keeps it from disengaging.

    I guess I should mention that I can shift gears fine with the car off.
    I can also start the car in 1st gear and shift into other gears with the car running with no clutch fine.

    Not sure if that helps at all.
