Default d16y8, smoking like a freaking train.

before you read this, I am not a mechanic, so I do not really know what I am talking about, if you read some of this and think im retarded, first fudge you, second, please at least try to help me out

    Alright, heres the deal.

I bought a hatch that had a minime swap y8 head on a y7 block, fucker slung a rod within three days.

car wasnt smoking or knocking when I bought it, but after I raged it a few times it developed a knock, I tried adding a bunch of lucas that only made it worse and the next day under some pretty heavy conditions it blew.

No biggie right, I had a spare y8 block in my garrage. Block came off a 1996 EX. EX was smoking like crazy, but i was under the impression that it was because of the head, because that head was royaly gone, three valves had decent sized chunks chiped off and there was black and white shit caked all over it.

I had no reason to believe the piston rings were shot, there were no scratches along the cylinder walls, no gunk or oil deposits on the pistons, the block was pretty darn clean. heck I even tried to put a little bit of gas on top of the piston to see if it leaked through, which it didnt.

so me and my buddy proceded to put everything back together, put that y8 back together Started it up and hit once more with problems.

Some things that you should know.

first off this is an OBD2 engine, hooked up with OBD1 wiring, and OBD1 P28 ECU.
Runs pretty good though other than whats bellow.

Vtec does not engage, but that probably a bad solenoid.

major issue, is that this fucker smokes like no tomorrow above 4000 rpm
I mean this thing makes clouds, of blueish whitish smoke, most likely oil.

Was I dumb to think that just because there were no scratches or deposits on the cylinders that the rings were not shot?

What are some other things that it can be?

what can I do other than the obvious rebuild, to ease to amoung of smoke this thing produces?

Oh Im also throwing a check engine light, but ill figure out the code tomorrow.

There's a couple of things you can check yourself to eliminate a big problem. One quick way is to crank the engine up and take the oil cap off while it's running. The idle shouldn't change at all. It it almost dies or stalls, you have bad compression/oil control rings. You can also do a compression check too, both wet and dry. Wet means that you're pouring oil on top of the pistions to see if it's compression increases significantly after a dry compression check. Which also says that you might have a compression ring problem. If everything is all said and done, assume the valve guide seals. With the right tools, they're easy to change out. You'll need a valve spring keeper tool (the one with magnets and make sure the thing in the center is spring loaded) and hammer to pop the keepers out. once the keepers come out, you can remove the retainers and springs. It's best to have compressed air when doing this so the valve don't drop in the cylinder. and when you are changing the guides, make sure you have the piston for the cylinder you're working on at TDC. Just in case the valve does fall, it will land on top of the piston and is easy to retrieve. When you see the valve guides, take a pair of vice grips, twist and pull. To install them, you use a deep well socket. That should take care of your smoking if you don't have piston ring problems. Good luck

    K series 626. That's right. It's got a K in it.

ok, so I started up the car, it was probably cold, but not too much since I ran it only about an hour and a half ago.

took the oil cap off, no change in idle what so ever.

I will try doing the same thing when the car is warm.

My compression guage was a cheepo 25 dolla auto zone guage that fucked up on me, sucker is stuck at 60psi. (probably me forgeting to let the pressure out for a whole day)

Ill take a gander in changing the valve guide seals.

but remember this, I saw this head in action only a few days before and the sucker didnt smoke at all. and I took to redline over and over agian.

    Black smoke = fuel
    Bluish/gray = oil
    White = coolant/water

I dont know, to meet it almost looks white, but my friend swears up and down its blueish
    grey,

I think its oil though, I just thought that the block might not have blown rings.

like i said, cylinder walls did not have any scratches on them, and piston heads had absolutely zero oil deposits and carbon build up on em

*sigh* I just dont feel like taking this sucker back out, though i might if I can get a d16z6 for a good price.
