Shocks don't support the weight of a car, the springs do...therefore springs determine the height of the car -- shocks controls dampening & rebound for the spring.

Correct, any ride height change was probably due to poor installation. Or like on the koni's they have 3 perch settings for height, but that's only the Koni's as far as i'm aware.

if the shocks are longer (or bigger in height) it will affect the height of your car. that might be what the people on that other site meant. but i dunno

The only way it will effect the height is if the shock is physically longer than the spring in it's compressed position and there is no room for it to go any further. You can normally compress a shock with your hand to a certain extent so there is no way it's going to support and hold up 1/4 or so the weight of a car.
