Subaru was content with its little niche market of station wagons that appealed to Lesbians and tree-huggers. They launched the WRX here in low numbers in 02 with a drastically different ad campaign and it took off, its success paved the way for the USDM STi. I dont think Crocodile Dundee would help SOA sell WRXs.

The older GC/GM chassis weighs a couple hundred pounds less than the GD bodies but is also I believe 50% less rigid of a chassis (i think thats a low estimate also, i've heard up to 80% stiffer on the newer ones). A local guy ran mid 11s with an older coupe with just an STI motor swap, the weight difference is quite a big change.
