Any autocrosses coming up?
Does anyone know of any autoX anytime soon, especially run by groups other than the SCCA? I'm sorry, $35 for 4 runs just isn't cool. I'm part of the Emory Car Club and I think it would be easier to get people involved with something quick and local like an autocross. I'm from Chicago and up there Miata, BMW, VW, etc. clubs run nice events where you get at least 10 runs for under $30. Haven't been able to find that down here at all.
No responses, buried under a pile of Honda ricer meets...nice. I didn't really expect anything better, but it was worth a shot. Nobody knows about anything? Everybody would rather hang out in the Varsity parking lot than actually drive their cars?
calm down man. dont expect to get a answer in 3 1/2 hours. its friday give some people a chance to get outta work.
for real calm down and there are alot of people who do autox on here just go hit the mountains that wont cost anything !

Learn to fucking READ before attacking me. I don't know if you've every actually gone to soloatlanta.com, but its a site for the SCCA, which I expressly mentioned I was not interested in.
And to everyone else, driving on the mountains is not the same as autocrossing, I'm looking for something that would allow people to drive their cars at 10/10s, when you're in the mountains you have to be relatively cautious due to the unknowns such as deer, bikers, and so on. Its fun, but not the same experience at all.
My bad on not seeing the scca mark. Whats your point in avoiding scca run events? Don't like their rules or just not looking for a competitive event? Why not run in the Panoz Racing School... it's not free but your on the track where you can go 100% without a worry remaining in the back of your head.
I don't like SCCA events because they're a worse value than open lapping days- 4 or 5 runs for $30, and spending a whole saturday out there, is just not cool. If I have a weekend to devote, I'll do a HPDE with NASA or the PCA or some other group. I'm just looking for a quick event for a few hours on a weekend. I've done club autocrosses in Chicago, (Miata, BMWCCA, etc.) that are about $25 for 16 runs. It gives you a LOT more time to play with your line, different braking points, car setup, etc.
As an aside, what's your car setup? Do you track it at all? I have an S14 also.
bah, scca solo2 is such a turn off, 2-3 hours of down time for 4 to 5 runs totaling 5 minutes, yay. Panoz racing school is incredibly expensive, $600 for a 2 day track school. No knock againt their instructors, but for beginners you can get the same level of instruction from your average joe instructor at any PCA, BMWCCA, etc. event.

I auto-x and I can understand your point. My question is why look for Solo2 events when you do not like them? I would go to the SCCA club racing and look for Solo1 events (time trials on road courses). The problem with Solo1 is the cost but you will drive your car for much longer times.
Because HPDEs (lapping days, SOLO I, whatever you want to call it) take a whole weekend and cost an order of magnitude more. I'm trying to find something that won't take up a whole saturday so a decently big group of college students can find the time to go together. Autocross is a good way to shake down cars too, you don't have the overheating issues with brakes, tires, and engines that you get on a real track. Open lapping is HARD on a car...autocross? Not so much.
The biggest problem with Auto-x is the lot cost. It becomes a circle where you need a lot of people to offset the lot and insurance costs. This causes it to take an afternoon with few runs.

Makes sense about the lot costs, the ones I've done in Chicago have been on smaller lots (community colleges, etc.) but still fun. And I'd rather do 4X as many runs on a slightly smaller lot than do an SCCA style event.
Depending on how far you want to drive you can get more runs in the Middle GA region Auto-X. But you have to drive to Cordele. You can also go up to Chatanooga I think you might get more runs there as well.
Hm, SCCA for both of those? Driving far kinda defeats the whole purpose though. I'll keep looking for good local club run events.
I kinda feel you PacoX. It's kinda hard to get on a site like IA and expect to find any real competition. it's mostly like drifting events (not realistic for peopel with small budgets) or car shows. but it's still a great tool for other shit you may need, dude!! (parts, buddies, ideas). i have autocrossed scca with my dad, and it really is a bust for $25, but it's really the only way to get ANY autocrossing done b/c renting a lot is so expensive. as someone mentioned above, you have to have a lot of people out there to outweight those costs. but i personally think that the experience, conversations, and tips that you get make it worth it and more.
personally i think IA should try to organize our own autocross competitions so that some of these boys could stop bragging about what they've got under the hood and actually using it. and then maybe they could actually learn how to calibrate/tune a car instead of just throwing parts at it to say they've got them...

Have you looked at the local bmwcca?
They follow scca rules it seems, but you get 6 runs for $35 member $45 non. There will be 7 events this year up in Lawrenceville. http://www.peachtreebmwcca.org/ptAX_index.asp
The 1st event is April 15.

I'm still looking for autocross options too. I'm not going to be able to budget in wheels and tires for this for maybe 3 months. Add in a helmet (needed for the bmwcca) and maybe 3.5mo and I'll be ready for my 1st autoX event.
I'm with You Guys I've done some solo2 before in the past and Y'all are right the Costs to Run Balance Sucks.
I mean You get up go to where ever the Hell there having the Event and get what like 3 maybe 4 runs in all Day
It just doesn't do for Me to be a SCCA Member seeing as how I have other things that come up on Autocross Weekends sometimes.
Don't get Me wrong I Love getting out there and having My fun and all but if We could get something else going that would Awesome.

You guys really dont understand the concept of the SCCA then, our local autocrosses, are run by me, and we have around 8 runs per event with only about 30 cars at each event, u want seat time, sure its about a 2 hour drive from atlanta, but Cordele is a good place to autocross.
Smaller Course, yes, but much more seat time
