i had the same router and it would not work for me either... i just got a 150 foot cat 5 cable and pluged it straight into my x box
i tried that lol.and the IP address still came up as failed
did you do anything other than plug it in?

connect the xbox by itself, and i bet it will connect. Its not getting its own ip address. i bet you have comcast dont you? your gonna have to configure your router.
Mine works just fine![]()
connect your xbox to your modem directly and make sure you have your xbox setup for DHCP (automatically assign IP)... if that still doesn't work then i would suggest trying it on someone else's network to see if possibly your nic card isn't working properly.

how do i do the DHCP thing?Originally Posted by Paul
and i tried all these and they don't seem to work,i'm sure im doing something wrong lol.i just don't know what it is.
you see under settings where it says AUTOMATIC (that means you are using DHCP) what does yours say here? also have you tried connecting it directly to your modem? bypass the router.Originally Posted by GLulic

example:
if you want to use the computer, u will have to press the reset button on the back of the modem with the computer plugged directly into the modem
If you wanted to use the Xbox live, than you would have to do the same, plug in the ethernet, and reset the modem on the back.
thats if you have comcast... if you bellsouth you dont have to do this.
what you just posted doesn't make any sense at all... i have comcast and am running my xbox, 2 laptops, 1 server and various other wireless devices like iphones off my router and never have to reset anything. obviously you don't have it setup right.Originally Posted by JITB
it should look like this... modem holds your outside connection - router distributes it for you to the devices trying to go out.
bypass the router and directly plug into the modem, if your xbox is setup for AUTOMATIC you will pull the ip and be up and running... if you are setup for MANUAL (STATIC) then you won't pull shit.

I couldnt get it to give the xbox and cpu a ip addy by it self, it was either one of the other. I had to get another router, b/c the microsoft one i had i couldnt configure.
And plus you are wireless i assume, so it does it on its own.
I told him to do that to see what the problem was, and what he will have to do to test it. He will have to reset the comcast wired modem in order to switch between the 2. The wired linksys, routers do work well with comcast some of them have to be configured.
what routers are you using? you have to make sure you have a router not a hub/switch. it doesn't matter if it has wireless or not the purpose of router is to do exactly as i previously explained. most all have web based control panels for you to configure - most come out of the box ready to work and setup for DHCP; unless you are using DSL you won't have to configure anything out of the box on probably all Linksys, Netgear, Dlink, and other home routers, etcOriginally Posted by JITB
DSL will require PPPOE connection (username/pass)
somepeople have issues w/ specific ports needing to be forwarded depending on router but it should still get him further than what he is seeing currently.
just go buy this and be done:

and if he does hace comcast he will have to get his xbox connected through his computer or it will not allow him to get on.
i don't have comcast i have bellsouth and its a linksys router and a hp pavilion laptop.
no you don't - i have comcast and can run xbox live w/ and w/o a single device on my network (it doesn't matter if you have wired/wireless either - i've done both and have both)Originally Posted by Ef_ftw73

oh, well i guess my set up is gay haha, and i had that linksey one but it was outdated or something, when did you get it ??
then do this on your laptop type: 192.168.1.1 in the address bar on ff/internet explorerOriginally Posted by GLulic
if you haven't changed the password default should be admin/admin - this is where you would go to configure anything which you shouldn't need to.
next need to go to your xbox and make sure you are using AUTOMATIC connection - after that is done let me know.

^^^ agreed, but then you figure it out, add me Ef Hatch Ftw ill prpbably be beasting in call of duty world at war
shit everyone add me? we can beast it together
im telling you.. it was a router..Originally Posted by Paul
a few years ago i had the same issue he was having.. but i had comcast, and it was due to my router not configuring. Now there are several modems that configure on their own.. he might not have had that, but he doesnt even have comcast so it dont matter. the newer linksys do it on their own.
but with the bellsouth, what u suggested should fix it.. unless someone changed his password
worse is if he doesn't remember his DSL user/passOriginally Posted by JITB
... i would suggest hard reset modem and reconfigure connection for DSL but if you don't remember your login credentials its pointless
Paul "your bullshit makes the flowers grow"
this is what i am doing at home next... i recently did this type of setup at work w/ higher end equipment and it works really well. separating your wireless from your wired and balancing the load, etc
Paul "your bullshit makes the flowers grow"
it works!!!thanks to the microsoft help line,it took a while but it works.now that i read what paul said last it was the same thing lol.thank you to all that participated.
