sugarbear, ( no homo). not to discredit you or pac, pac rapped and talked about relevent issues and things, but to me, pac was another iffy artist. he admited and so did his mom, that he never was a gangsta. if you look at his life, pac went to smart schools all his life and joined a happy go lucky rap group when he first came out.
but he did talk about real issues which made him an emcee in my eyes. i'm just pissed he showed ppl a life that wasn't really his when he was on death row.

Serious social issues. It's just that in the late 70s, the rhyming had a more melodic sound to it. And it's really hard to discount the fact that if who we call the originators of hip hop refer to someone else as the originator of hip hop, or the godfather of rap.Originally Posted by DESTRO_91

what i dont understand is how just because an artist blows up..that they are no longer hip hop artist? ti was underground before he blew up w/'trap musik'...i mean **** his first album 'i'm serious' didnt blow up, but it was definitely on point imo...so...if he remained underground, would that mean that he would have remained hip hop?doesnt make logical sense...

I think there is only Hip-hop. Then there are the thousand and one sub-genres we choose to listen to and label artists: (East Coast: Hip-hop(Wu-Tang Clan, NaS), Underground/Mixtape/Battle(Joe Budden, Cassidy, Papoose), Go-go(don't really know any go-go artists), (South: Crunk(Lil Jon, Three 6 Mafia), Snap(Dem Franchise Boyz), Trap(T.I. & Jeezy), Bootyshake(2 Live Crew), Crunk & B(Ciara), Screw(a Texas thing), Hardcore(Geto Boys) and whatever name "they" decide to give the music that Soulja Boy is doing, (Midwest: Nelly) I left Kanye and Common out because "to me" they don't fit the traditional Midwest description. (West Coast: Hyphy(E-40, Keak da Sneak), Underground(Souls of Mischief, Del the Funky Homosapien), Gangster(N.W.A., Ice Cube), (Horror Rap: Ganksta NIP, Gravediggaz), and the groups like the Shop Boyz "Party Like A Rockstar", Missy Elliot. I'm pretty sure I left out some other examples. Hip-Hop is too diverse to be broken down into either Hip-hop or rap. Every sub-genre is an off-shoot of the original "Hip-hop". This debate will never end, but I do like discussing it.

i feel the truth to your post...cuz how i also look at it too...even the dance/snap/etc songs can be traced back to when hiphop first started...there were dance songs, songs that touched on topics of that time, gangsta rap started a lil while after that...so...yea hip hop is wide based...but if i had to say whats rap, hip hop and gangsta rap, i stick by what i saidOriginally Posted by DESTRO_91

Wow, I didnt expect 3 pages!
My take goes like this:
Hip Hop is the culture, rapping is what ALL artist do. Anyway you slice it, it's a form of art. There are several subcutures that have formed due to the evolution of time. Beebob, battle rap, MC'ing, breaking, rhyming about issues are all apart of hip hop. East/West coast, North, underground, crunk, dirty south, etc are all subcultures of hip-hop
Around 1995 hip hop hit the mainstream media hard and turned into pop music. Yes I said it. Money and toys and fame were the goal to reach for, because the "Struggle" was not as hard to overcome. Not all hip hop artist are to be considered pop, but nearly all are. Outkast (my favorites) turned pop rappers as of late due to the transistion there were swpet into. Early in their career though they rapped about issues and things they did and encountered everyday. All grown up now they see life different, thus focus is different. They are still one of the greatest duos though!
TI, Luda, JayZ, Soulja Boi, Game, 50 pennies, and etc are Pop rappers. Not really a bad thing at all (making big $). The people like Soulja Boi have started a new transition.
Tupac was a pop rapper ......Biggie, i can't really say where he falls.
Gangsta rap, = NWA. Cube, dre, snoop were masters at this. You can't make gangsta rap if you didn't walk the walk. Nowadays people consider a rapper with tats a gangster. Selling dope does NOT make you a gangster, sorry nope. Now if you are moving MAJOR weight FOR REAL, with a network pulling down MAJOR $$, controlling s*it, then you may be gangsta. There are more Gangsta people in the Atlanta business center than in the music industry![]()
Ice Cube dropped his album recently and it is CLASSIC HARDCORE GANGSTA music with ISSUES being addressed on every track. He kept it real. Sadly it wont hit the charts hard (like Common, taleb, Mos bef, etc.) because it is not about selling dope, and a video with a happy dance. He is on some grown man stuff, showing people he still know his roots. encouraging kids to do better than the BS that is out. Telling people to stop blaming issues on gangsta music and hip hop.
Game, 5 dimes aka Mr. shot 9 times, etc are NOT gangsta rappers.

He is still Hip hop, but Pop mainstream.....make sense? Trap Musik was hot, but not all truth to his life. He had to say things to get the hype. Sorry, but its the truth. He is a creative mind that why I like the lyrics and spins he puts on things.Originally Posted by Sammich
Issues are not the big thing to them anymore, its the fame that drives them, not the passion of the music.
I am a BIG TI supporter, I bought 2 of every album.
I CAN SEE IF YOU SAID THAT WAYNE WAS IN THE POP MAINSTREAM...I MEAN I DONT SEE HIM TOUCHING ON TOPICS AT ALL...JUST ALOT OF WORDPLAY AND PUNCHLINES
BUT TI TOUCHES ON TOPICS THAT CONCERN HIM AND LET PPLE KNOW OF WHAT HE DID, CONSEQUENCES, 'REASONINGS'/EXCUSE WHY HE DID WHAT HE DID..ACCOMPANIED W/ THE DIS OF SHAWTY LO..BUT I DONT SEE HIM AS POP MAINSTREAM...AT ALL, SORRY.
I'm with you on TI. The only "mainstream" rapper I support or even listen to at all.Originally Posted by AirMax95

He does hit on lots of issues, but all he did was not true. He was NOT pushing a S-class benz when his first album dropped, lol. He is one of those rappers who doesnt need to spin off fabricated stories to please people. He did it one too many times in my eyes, btu it was still creative lyrics![]()
The new TI album he knocked it out of the park! He lost the Pop Mainstream dog leash and did what his is great for, rapping REAL TALK.
lol @ Wayne. When he was younger he was great, now I dont know WTF he is doing.
LOL I CANT SAY WHETHER THE S-CLASS BENZ IS TRUE OR NOT..BUT LOL YEA..THE NEW ALBUM...56 BARZ AND IM ILLY...COMPLETE WHOAZ...JOINT IS CRAZY..ONLY REASON I WANA SKIP SONGS IS TO HEAR ONE IVE BEEN DYING TO HEAR AGAINOriginally Posted by AirMax95

I listened to TI twice yesterday at work. I acan actually put the media player on random and not get pissed off, lol.
The stuff wayne spews now is word play and sound effects, lol. Catchy for mainstream, but FAR from his roots.
QD is prolly going to slaughter my post too. Hopefully he elaborates, lol.

sadly it is art, garbage sounding compared to most, but he is COMPLETELY MAINSTREAM. He raps rhymes if anything, not content. I will NEVER play that trash in my car, stereo, or party.Originally Posted by Sammich

now tha ti think about it and have read this topic more, i think there is tasteful rap and untasteful rap.
most snap and souljs boi music and hordcore down south music might fall into the untasteful side. while artist like luda, missy,T.I ( since you guys thinik so), jezzy, might fall into the tasteful side.
the tasteful side can be accepted as listenable, even though they might not be called emcee's or anything.
through out urban music ever since we had it, therer has always been hip-hop and tasteful rap. then of course came gangsta rap and booty dance music.
wealth is of the mind and not the pockett
the real gangsta rappers are OG's. the mainstream labels the new people based on image.
Booty music, snap, and soulja boy dancing is for the club, its pop, lol.
The comments I make have nothing to do with what I listen to. And I don't listen to 90s rap. I don't know how you have your head sitting on your shoulders to think that TI, Jay and Jeezy are hip hoppers. Jay is the only one even close to it, but he is more of a pop artist. TI and Jeezy were nowhere near hip hop even before they "blew up."Originally Posted by Sammich
Game is in the middle of gangsta rap and pop art. He talks a lot of gangsta shiit andhe's been through that shiit as well. Don't be sorry about your opinion. Not that it holds much water.Originally Posted by Sammich
Who was hip hop and then "blew up" and became NOT hip hop? Not TI. That's for sure. You got your outlook on this genre all fucced up man. That's why I don't think your opinion of things concerning rap is really effective. You make no sense in the WL nor do you outside of it. At least the WL is made for a lot of the "not making sense." So you should stay in there where you fit better. Later, QD.Originally Posted by Sammich

But I guess a lot of the original hip hop "is the lifestyle" whereas rap is "the language of hip hop" sort of old school mentality is most correct.
These days, there's a very blurry line between hip hop and rap.
I call stuff like JayZ's commercial rap and del is more underground - I'm surprised anybody even knew who he is on here. Any ChinoXL fans out there? And of course you can get into the Black Elvis all day with me.
