Ok, so after all the threads pinning the artist of now and then, I want to see where some people heads are.
QD, TwinJ, Big Rick, leobond001, etc.....
WITHOUT USING GOOGLE OR WIKI, let's discuss the difference, if any, of the above music genres.

WITHOUT USING GOOGLE OR WIKI, let's discuss the difference, if any, of the above music genres.
GO!
rap - compiliation of words that rhyme
ex. soulja boi
hip hop - telling/speaking of issues/views on a topic that is relevant either to the artists or people that can relate
ex. T.I. Jay Jeezy (i know i'm going to catch slack on this but his new cd is beginning to go along the lines of being an actual hip hop artist) Nas
gangsta music - rapping (see first definition) about the life of living as a gangsta...mix of rap and hip hop..IMO
ex. early snoop, dre
my interpretation is.......
rap- putting lyrics together that make sense on a great beat!!!
hip-hop-rhymes but doesnt rilly matter.....its music u hear in the club!!!
gangsta rap- like PBsloot said snoop and dre......but now so jeezy and most southern rappers!!!
......1
yea but they consider soulja boy a hip hop artist.....he rilly doesnt rap.....he does the Dr suess sh!t!!!!Originally Posted by Sammich
and nas is a rapper which is something u listen to for lyrical content......when im in the club listening to hip-hop im not tryna listen to the words because for the most part i already know them and they are catchy!!
rap u have to listen to over and over again to retain it!!!!......1

Hip Hop: True lyrical content.
Rap: a distant cousin of hip hop, strictly marketed for commercial purposes i.e radio play and selling cd's and ringtones.
Gangster rap: bastard child of hip hop where "artists" delve into issues that are relevant to them i.e selling drugs, the money, cars, and ho's.

TI, Jay Z and Jeezy considered hip hop artists? Are you serious? This isn't the WL. None of those make that cut. They fit in the RAP category.
Later, QD.
i knew you would say that about my comment, due to you being a 80-90s hip hop rider...yes ti, jay, and jeezy are hip hop artist (jeezy making the switch w/ the recession album)....Originally Posted by quickdodgeŽ

what i dont understand is how just because an artist blows up..that they are no longer hip hop artist? ti was underground before he blew up w/'trap musik'...i mean **** his first album 'i'm serious' didnt blow up, but it was definitely on point imo...so...if he remained underground, would that mean that he would have remained hip hop?doesnt make logical sense...
I think there is only Hip-hop. Then there are the thousand and one sub-genres we choose to listen to and label artists: (East Coast: Hip-hop(Wu-Tang Clan, NaS), Underground/Mixtape/Battle(Joe Budden, Cassidy, Papoose), Go-go(don't really know any go-go artists), (South: Crunk(Lil Jon, Three 6 Mafia), Snap(Dem Franchise Boyz), Trap(T.I. & Jeezy), Bootyshake(2 Live Crew), Crunk & B(Ciara), Screw(a Texas thing), Hardcore(Geto Boys) and whatever name "they" decide to give the music that Soulja Boy is doing, (Midwest: Nelly) I left Kanye and Common out because "to me" they don't fit the traditional Midwest description. (West Coast: Hyphy(E-40, Keak da Sneak), Underground(Souls of Mischief, Del the Funky Homosapien), Gangster(N.W.A., Ice Cube), (Horror Rap: Ganksta NIP, Gravediggaz), and the groups like the Shop Boyz "Party Like A Rockstar", Missy Elliot. I'm pretty sure I left out some other examples. Hip-Hop is too diverse to be broken down into either Hip-hop or rap. Every sub-genre is an off-shoot of the original "Hip-hop". This debate will never end, but I do like discussing it.
I'm allergic to pistons.
The comments I make have nothing to do with what I listen to. And I don't listen to 90s rap. I don't know how you have your head sitting on your shoulders to think that TI, Jay and Jeezy are hip hoppers. Jay is the only one even close to it, but he is more of a pop artist. TI and Jeezy were nowhere near hip hop even before they "blew up."Originally Posted by Sammich

Who was hip hop and then "blew up" and became NOT hip hop? Not TI. That's for sure. You got your outlook on this genre all fucced up man. That's why I don't think your opinion of things concerning rap is really effective. You make no sense in the WL nor do you outside of it. At least the WL is made for a lot of the "not making sense." So you should stay in there where you fit better. Later, QD.Originally Posted by Sammich

Teens, 20's, and 30 are three different generations(age groups) of music. I do agree with the comment sammich made and some others. Then some others was just ignorant, like the last guy before me.
Of course its people missing. I would need sometime to make my list, and I am just tired I can't do it. Thinking hard right now is out of my capability's. I haven't seen anyone post up Andre3000 & BigBoi which is one of my favorites alsoOriginally Posted by quickdodgeŽ

Not your list. How can you agree with what PBS put as is "ex" for each type of rap? Do you really place TI, Jeezy and Jay Z in the "hip hop" category?Originally Posted by twinj
Me? I wouldn't place anyone in the South or the West Coast in the hip hop genre. Just like I wouldn't place hardly anyone from the South or East Coast in the "gangsta rap" section. But there are artists from all over the country in rap in general.
Some examples:
Rap - West Coast - Digital Underground, Del the Funke Homosapien
East Coast - Jay Z, 50 Cent, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane
South - TI, Jeezy, Outkast, Goodie Mob, No Limit artists, Cash Money artists
Hip Hop - Nas, KRS-1, Talib Kwali, Immortal Technique, Melle Mel, Furious Five
Gangsta Rap - NWA, DJ Quik, Above the Law, Ice T, Game, Crooked I
That's just a smidgen of my artists. Don't really feel like getting into this too deep. Later, QD.
"Rap is what you do
"Hip hop is something you live"
Truthfully everyone has there own opinions on what "real" rap or what "real" hip hop is what i think is hip hop might be considered garbage or rap and vice versa....there really isn't anyway to tell or judge.

IMO "Hip Hop" is a period.
like the Baroque Period or Renaissance Period or Classical Period
everything done during those times related to the name of the period.
the Renaissance Period had its particular music AND art.
Hip Hop has its music and art.
people tend to think as African Americans we only have 2 types of music or 3 as stated but like Caucasians our artists fall into many different catagories
The Roots & Nas id put in the "Hip Hop" music category
Soldier Boy & Comp. id put in the "Pop" or "Crunk" category
50 Cent I suppose you can put in the "Gangsta Rap" and "Pop" category depending on what he's talking about
I lol'd at the caucasian remark. But I agree, hip-hop is something the artists live for and use their opinions on what's important to them and relevent to the real world. I don't listen to "gangta rap" because as a suburban whiteboy I don't feel it relates to me at all, and generally think most of those artists are kinda dumb. However I haven't lived through what they have so I can't really pass judgement. I don't like Souja Boy being called "the new generation of hip-hop" because he really shares nothing with the real hip-hop artists of today or the past. When you listen to The Roots, Nas, Atmosphere, POS, Brother Ali, etc... they aren't talking about cranking a stupid dance. There's very clear definitions between rap artists(which is a general description of all styles).Originally Posted by Dirty Octopus

Sad day, but the TI's, Luda', JayZ, Nas, etc actually are not into main stream hype I feel. TI almost gave in, but he jumped ship!
he got me. lol
Soulja boy = Garbage.

wow. i jumped into this thread late. ok
hip hip ( emcee)- music that brings and up lifts ppl. a way of life. inspiratain. brings a nation together. soulful
ex-little brother, lupe, kanye, nas, talib, common, cool kids and so one
ex- krs-one, nas, leaders of the new schhol, tribe called quest and so on
rap ( rappers)- entertainment, show, not real. entertainment music
Ex- luda, t.i., plies, rick ross, lil wayne, t pain, yound jock and so on
now you can break down rap into lyrics. some rappers have lyrics, pushlines and aren't necessaraly taking about drugs or lives they never lived.
ex- cassidy, dmx, cory gunz, fabulous, clipse, busta rhymes, jada kiss, sheek, styles p and so on
not all rap is trash. lyrical rap is nice, because you kinda get a story, and it makes you think.
now rap such as soulja boi, young joc, rick ross, plies, shawty low, and so one. what does it give you? nothing. might be ok in the club if your into that stuff, but other than that, it's horrible.
P.S- and yes, T.I makes the horrible list. i wish someone could tell me what else he raps about tother than cars and drugs? so what makes him good? he's not a trend setter. just a cocaine flow follwer

Technically there is only hip-hop. Hip-hop was the name given to the type music that originated in New York in the late 70's and early 80's. Since it (hip-hop) originated in New York, New Yorkers took it upon themselves to claim it as their own music, hence all the New York artists stating that they are trying to "bring it back to New York." Rap, is the label that the New York "powers that be" gave to any hip-hop music outside New York. Gangsta(er) rap, is the term the media gave to hip-hop that depicted graphic descriptions of the lives and environments of the artists ie. NWA, Geto Boys. The lines of hip-hop, rap, gangsta rap, crunk, snap, backpack, underground, bootyshake, hyphy and crunk & B are blurred now. If you ask 100 people their definition of hip-hop or rap and who they think fall into each of the above categories and you'll get 100 different responses. All lot of the other categories were invented by the regions they came from in order to somehow invoke some differentiation from every other region.
I'm allergic to pistons.
Technically, I have to disagree with you, lolol. Seriously, though. Hip hop and rap, on a technical level is one and the same. They both originated out of the same hoods and by the same people. No officials or higher-ups coined the term for hip hop. Now in the late 60's, a man by the name of Abiodun Oyewole, was a founding member of The Last Poets. He has always been regarded as the first rapper. Even back in the late 70s, he was aka-ed that. Rap used to be a DJ's gig. The MC (or emcee) would shout over the DJ and talk about him. Then they decided to try to talk with the beat and then took into poetry and rhyming. That's when the MC became known as the rapper. Later, QD.Originally Posted by DESTRO_91
