I dont think they could have done it much better either. It was realistic, yet still had the original sound. It was probably meant to be in all the transformations, but was just hard to hear in some due to the endless action.

I read somewhere that frenzy was the replacement for soundwave. It said that they tried to make soundwave work, but decided to go with frenzy instead since they would have had to alter soudwave so much to bring him up to date and believable.
