The poll lacks great guitarists, but out of all of them, who I think is the best....Hands down Malmsteen gets my vote. He is amazing. But this poll sucks dick because it lacks guitarists such as Morello and Tipton...

I'm not totally crazy about his music, but Andy Mckee should be right up there.

    Alan Holdsworth
    Al Di Meola
    Frank Zappa
Steve Vai (who was also taught by Zappa, not just Satriani)
    Frank Gambale

I'm sure I could name a shitload more, but I've got to go to work now. FTL!

Al Di Meola's (middle) song played with Paco De Lucia (left) and John McLaughlin (right). John learned guitar with Satana but got better. LOL But any of these cars are epic.

Hmmm... Here's some guitarist I think's the best. Can't really choose one because of so many different styles and genres.

Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple) (the best IMO), Andy McKee, Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Guthrie Govan, John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Paul Gilbert (Racer X), Tony MacAlpine, and of course Satriani, Vai, and Yngwie.

Do people really think John Mayor is even in the same league as most of these guys that are being posted up? Fucking idiots...

Have you ever saw John Mayer live? I'm guessing no.

When you do - get there early and watch him warm-up. After seeing him warm-up in Denver for 20 minutes I could have left... I had my money's worth. JM can burn the guitar down to the GROUND - PERIOD. He's a level 25 guitar player who records music at level 10 bc he's on cruise control.

The best thing he did for his playing was drop out of Berkley. He's a young gun to watch for sure.

John Mayer is a monster. I recommend anyone to get the Eric Clapton Crossroads videos and watch them. Those are real guitar players, from all genres, and John Mayer holds his own with the BEST of them.

Mayor may be a good, maybe even great( I don't think so) guitar player, but you are missing he is FAR away from being any kind of best...

Nope, but I have a pretty large passion for Music itself. I'll admit I think John Mayors music is total garbage in every sense. But, I did go and listen to some of his solos that people praise, and some of his live work people praise, and I was not impressed, at all, in the least. He is good, yes, he wouldn't be so successful if he wasn't musically talented, but he would not even be in the top 20 for me for best guitarists... Go look at people like Morello, malmsteen, petrucci, tipton, etc....They blow this clown away in every sense when It comes to playing the guitar.

I think John Mayer would be good to me if he just played guitar and stopped making cds for 15 year old girls.

    ENough said.

No offense, but musicians hear very different things than non-musicians when we listen to music. We hear and feel things that the average listener doesn't.

It's like when people tell me my cars are quick - LOL. I know RIGHT AWAY that they are admiring performance cars through the eyes of some1 that really doesn't know performance cars. LOL. I nod and say thanx, but in the back of my mind I ignore them bc they simply arent versed enough to know what a "quick' car is. The musicians that MUSICIANS go to see is very diff than the musicians that non-musicians go to see. Doesn't mean that you're a dummy - it just means we have a different ear than others. Carry on.

Robert Cray, Hubert Sumlin, SRV, Buddy Guy, B. B. King, Dan Tyminski, Vince Gill, J. J. Cale, Brent Mason (probably the best next to SVR), Joe Satriani.

I completely understand where you are coming from. So you can honestly, with a straight face, tell me John Mayor is a better, and more talented guitar player then say....Yngwie Malmsteen?

All the guitarist listed are praised for what they can do on the guitar, not for their soul in the music through their guitar.... jmo... If I were to say the "best guitarist", it would be dimebag darrell... he had soul in his music... next would be zakk wylde... If i hd to chose from the list, i would say bb king...

Technical playing, John probably knows more, speed and metal, Yngwie has him.

I am guessing you are referring to the likes of Malmsteen... I can't stand to hear people say that is all he plays, or can play. It's what he is known for, but he plays many different styles, and can do just about anything on a guitar... But I am guessing you have never seen him live, nor cared to look into his music much.

How much do you know about technical music. I didn't say Yngwie isn't technically sound, but I know Mayers background. He wasn't even a singer till later on. Mayer has studied guitar since he was young.

Hahahahaha. Do you even know who Malmsteen is? Honestly? He is one of the most influential guitar player in history you fuck. He has been playing for 40 years... Go to youtube, listen to his solo call Black Star. It's not his best or anything, and not anything too special, except for the fact that he wrote it when he was 9 years old. You argument of "Mayor has been playing since he was young" is invalid, because malmsteen has been playing longer then John the pussy mayor has been alive.

Trust me. John's guitar parts are for the most part very technical and hard to play. I've tried. Yngwie's stuff is less technical. Still hard to play cause a lot of it is fast as hell. Two totally different kinds of artists though.

I have forgotten more about music than you will ever learn. Their are many influential and historic guitar players. It don't mean they are the best.

Riiiiight. And a lot of people on here think that because they are secretly in love with John Mayor that he is suddenly one of the best guitarist there ever was.
