I love Clapton, he just gets better with age. Did anyone see the episode of That 70s Show where the priest asked Eric and Hyde to draw Jesus and they both drew Clapton. Tim Reynolds is pretty awesome too, but he is more of an acoustic player.

but because what you hear is fast does not mean it is the most skillful.

some of the most technical things in guitar aren't raging in an ampitheater distorted. When you are playing on distortion and fast like that, playing live gives you a lot more opportunities to mess up and most of the time have the mistake go unnoticed.

When you are playing some slower jams as a guitarist, by yourself for instance, with a more technical song... that requires huge amounts of skill and focus

while that is true about death and some power metal, have you ever listened to blind guardian and see andre olbrich's skill? not distorted, or played fast that much.

My favorite guitarist is Alex Lifeson, followed by Buckethead at #2.

As far as the BEST....who knows...who cares. It's 100% subjective.

But I'll say this much: I once saw Fredrik Thordendal (lead guitarist of Meshuggah) do a badass solo while running around in a circle. I don't know any other guitarist that does that.

Most of the people posting here, whether I like what they have to say or not, are making somewhat valid arguments. Your post wasn't one of them.

Maybe you should switch over to country music or rap for a while, because something's seriously clouding your judgement.

    .

maybe i judge on technical skill, ability, and how sick it sounds. not on how popular they are, and how much weed they can smoke.

SRV played a 6 string guitar tuned down to Eb

What you are thinking of is the string gauge he played. He used a set that ranged from a low E at .058 to .012 at the high E. So when a lot of people say he "played 12 strings" they are talking about the gauge of the strings. Which is a pretty amazing feat in and of itself because all those prog-metal guys like Satriani and Vai are using .008's and .009's

I agree about Keith Richards making the guitar suit him. If you look at the tab for "Wild Horses", there are about 6 different guitar tracks with 6 different tunings used. He is most famous for the "open G" tuning that uses only 5 strings, eleminating the high E.

I'm also amazed nobody mentioned Jack White.

And there hasn't been a single country player mentioned either. Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Richard Bennett, James Burton, Duane Eddy, etc.

    I play!

I do appriciate all types of guitar players and their different types of music. I like John5 (who plays metal), however, he started out playing blues and country. I have seen him live a few times and everytime I do, I am more and more impressed. Knowing how hard it was for me to learn to play, I respect anyone who can pick up a guitar and play any tune.

Edited to give an agreement to Jack White.

Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughn should be topping this list without any competition. Eric Clapton is good, but Stevie is definitely better in terms of actual skill. Jimmy Page...well, Jimmy speaks for himself.

Eddie Van Halen is good, but by far not the best. Angus is fun as hell to watch and he'll beat on a guitar but, if you take away his showmanship, you'll see that he's really not all that.
