I'd love to see Schumacher succeed, but I'm kind of hoping to see Rosberg pull some equally fast times or faster. So far they're both looking pretty strong. It'll be interesting to see if they can make a run at the constructor's championship

Opinions of the McLaren wing? I'm still really confused at it after reading this....

    Autosport...

    Johnathon Noble

Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn thinks he and his fellow competitors have no option but to resign themselves to developing complicated venting systems in the wake of McLaren's ingenious device being approved by the FIA.

The F-duct vent system on the McLaren, which helps stall the rear wing for a straight-line speed boost via the driver covering a hole in the cockpit, has been the subject of intense controversy in the build-up to the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Some teams are unhappy that the FIA has deemed it legal - as they believe it is effectively a moveable aerodynamic device. However, the governing body has adopted the stance that the driver cannot be treated as a moving part of the car.

Brawn, whose team stole a march on the opposition 12 months ago when it ran double diffusers, has ruled out taking the matter any further and instead says his focus will be on bringing the concept onto his own W01.

"We will have to get on and make our own version of it now," said Brawn. "It wasn't clear what the situation was, but we have had clarity from the FIA about how they want to treat it, so we are all off running in that direction."

Details of what McLaren was up to were unclear before the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, but close analysis of the car by rival teams has produced more information about the design idea.

Brawn said about his own team's view on the matter: "We had an idea that they were doing it - we didn't understand how they were doing it. But now we do."

Although Brawn is relaxed about the matter, Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne is still unsure why the duct system has been approved.

"I still believe it's a moveable aerodynamic device because the configuration of the [car's] aerodynamics are changing," he explained. "Whether the driver is doing with it his knee or not, they [the aerodynamics] are not the same all the time so therefore it must be a moveable aero device.

"We know what the rules are...but it is a pretty silly interpretation."

I'm a little confused about how that duct works.

Same here, anyone care to dumb it down for me? Does it have to do with the amount of airflow?

What is basically does is scoop up air and channels it through the body, then releases the air under the rear of the wing. In a sense, its creating lift, which reduces the down force. By the way I understand it, the driver is able to control a panel with his knee that allows it to open and close.

So basically, during the long straights of the track, the driver opens it up and is able to reduce some of the down force which works against the car at high speeds.

A pretty ingenious way to get around the rules.

Doesn't that constitute as driver changes to the aero? I thought that was against the rules. Either way pretty clever.

I'm pulling for Rosberg, but those Ferrari's were looking fast in qualifying this morning. Should be a good race tomorrow

Driver changes to the aero? Drivers change the aero all the time by looking left and right. Consider how Ruben's always tilts his helmet on the straight.

The big thing behind this is the driver isn't considered part of the aero.

The issue here is there is a device on the car that stalls the rear wing which the teams said they wouldn't make for more than ten years.

I didn't mean to look cocky if i did.

The information about this device really hit on the morning of Friday practice. Bahrain isn't the best test for it right now as the circuit was ruined (if it could be any worse) by splitting the 2 parts of the track more and introducing what is effectively a 3 turn chicane on what used to be a fast section of track. It's become more of a stop go circuit than it was before.

Race day will always tell more though.

What little I know about F1 circuits, that new section on Bahrain looked absolutely horrible. The cars were getting jarred around terribly.

I hate new circuits but I like this track, it's bumpy as hell and throws the cars around which I like. I hate boring smooth stuff. lol It shows more car control.

Qualifying was awesome and I'll be watching all the coverage on BBC this year a little delayed but I really enjoy their at the event coverage.

I hate Alonso. If there are two drivers I really can't stand it's Alonso and Hamilton.

    Behind him Vettel and Rosberg.

I'm watching, but comparing their pit numbers is not fair. Red Bull is going to have about 12 people out there to change 4 tires. I love the look of the new Renault cars. Kinda disappointed to see Hulkenberg go off track and was that really oil burning off Webber's car at the beginning?

I didn't say it was supposed to be fair. No reason Nascar can't figure out what a single lug is. Or F.I. ect ect.

That had to be oil of Webber.

^NASCAR still hasn't figured out how to race their cars on a barely damp track or switch to a tire manufacturer that knows what they're doing.

The series of tire changes that just happened was amazing. Hamilton just set fastest lap, but Vettel just got fresh tires so let's see what he runs.

So true, it's almost worth waiting for the race to hit a torrent site so I can just skip all the commercials. I'm going to miss the end of the race anyways since I have to go to work.

Looks like Alonso has this one wrapped up. The Ferrari camp is going to go crazy after this 1-2 finish. Nice to see Massa put up a good early showing after last years incident.

I think this was a great place to start the year off. It will give the teams a lot of knowledge for what to expect throughout the year with the increased fuel capacity and how it will impact tire life. So far it looks like the tires are holding up great to the increased weight.

    Late, but regarding McLaren's wing:

Rule states aero components cannot be movable by driver. McLaren's case is the aero is staying fixed, but the downforce is altered by creating a stagnant region under the wing: this is similar to how a truck has a stagnant pocket in the truck bed when the tailgate is closed, thus actually making the truck more aerodynamic with the tailgate up than with the tailgate down.

Ingenious way of altering aero that is legal.

Regardless, you've got the fastest driver on that line-up in Ferrari with "the best car" he has ever driven. That says a lot, and Little Miss Sunshine will probably win the WDC.

Great race, unfortunately had to leave for work before it was over. I agree about the succession of pit stops, it was amazing how fast they were. Stinks for Vettel, he had it won.
