Default Nissan Sentra SE-R Wins NASA National Championship

I havent posted in a while but I thought I would put this out there. I took my 02 SE-R to the NASA National Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah (Miller Motorsports Park) and took home a 1st place victory.

We beat out some much faster cars than ours and overcame a lot of protesting by the officials but we were always in spec. We even put down 179whp @ 5000ft. 5hp below our max for our car (hp v weight ratio). 2nd place was 2 seconds behind us, with our track record of 2.17.9.

As far as I know, this is the only B15 to win a National Championship. Our car is nothing special with just a couple bolt ons. It weighs 2740lbs, too. I rented a truck and have a tow dolly - so like next to nothing invested in the car, but it drives so well.

    Enjoy!

Overall Recap for NASA Time Trial Nationals 2009

Just to clarify for everyone, here's what happened at the NASA Nationals event at Miller Motorsports Park on September 16th, 2009...

Ksport had drivers from 3 Classes in 2 Groups representing us and our products at the event, and all 3 did very well. In the TTC Class, Brady Dohrmann in his BMW M3 from Mesa, Arizona put down a 2:11.348 Lap, securing 2nd Place for the weekend. Dohrmann was about 7/10ths of a second faster than a Lotus Elise, and almost 3.5 seconds faster than Scion tC. Ian Stewart, in his Mini Cooper S managed to outdo Brady by a slim half-second. Another Arizona driver, Tage Evanson, managed to work his 1995 Honda Civic around Miller in a scant 2:03.031, beating out a slew of Rear-wheel and All-wheel driven vehicles. Evos, STis, 2 Corvettes, an RX7, BMW, and a Porsche all fell prey to Casper, the white EG Honda Civic. As the only Front Wheel Drive vehicle in sight, Evanson managed to impress every driver in his class, including the 2 Corvettes that managed to escape his wrath. Kenneth Smith and Geffrey Sawtelle ran their 'vettes around Miller .038 and .533 faster than Tage, respectively. Oh, and by the way- Tage is VERY close to beating Chris Rados FWD Lap Record at Buttonwillow. If he does it, he'll be the fastest Front Wheel Drive to ever hit that track. Very impressive for a guy who only does this part-time, without huge corporate sponsorships.

The star of the show however was Joe Ippolito of Cummings, Georgia. Joe has been rocking the Southeast Region in NASA and other events with his 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R for the past few years now, and this year was an awesome one for Joe and his team. Of the 7 tracks in the Southeast Region, Joe holds 3 track records for his class. Now, to some, that in itself may not be that impressive. Take into account the fact that Joe is still running a Normally Aspirated 4 Cylinder QR25DE engine in a sedan with basic bolt-ons and street suspension, and things start to come hurtling into perspective rather quickly. Almost as quickly as his Miller Motorsports Park lap time, which for the record was 2:17.990. That's 2.22 seconds faster than his nearest opponent! That's the biggest gap between a 1st and 2nd place in ALL of Group G for the 2009 Nationals!

Ok, so I mentioned that Joe is still on street suspension, right? He and Tage are both running Ksport Kontrol Pro coilovers with custom spring rates. Anybody could order the EXACT same setup. No custom valving, no high-end inverted shocks or remote reservoirs. Keep that in mind when you think about the track on your Kontrol Pros!

If you're interested in custom spring rates for your Ksport Damper System, please call us at 480 829 8100, or email [email protected] to find out more!

Thanks for the Reps! Not bad for a car with an intake, exhaust and some suspension bits.

I also took home the SE Championship with NASA in December with 17 out of 20 race wins for 2009. And set a new track record at Road Atlanta with a 1.43. Next year the car will have a VQ35.

    Enjoy!

Thats 1.5 secs slower than me with a 1.43.3. I'm in a FWD, solid rear axle sentra with basic bolt ons and two blown shocks. And NO AERO. That Spec's motor cost $11K. My entire car cost $2,300.

    Nothing comes close to us..

lol, look man, Im not ragging on you or your SE-R. i happen to like the SE-Rs. Like I said, thats a good time for a SE-R and congratulations on winning the NASA Championship(I crewed for the SM champ in 07)but that it nowhere close to what I would say is screaming around RA. Its screaming for you and your car, but not at RA.

as far as lap record for a SM, check your records again.

1:42:7. two people got into 42.7 and pombo was a 42.9.
this is on the Toyo 888. is NASA still doing the toyos also?

Everyone is saying the same thing - for an basic SER, it is screaming. Nobody gave the B15 a chance in hell at being a decent track car until now. And anyone can duplicate it. Not that its the fastest car ever to go around RA.

The SM record I listed is from NASA SE.

I've seen quite a few Sentra race cars same body style as yours throughout the time.

It is fast for your car and the mods, nobody said it wasn't.

nobody gave it a chance? I guess RTR is nobody?

also anyone can duplicate it, but who would if its got two blown shocks? lol. I keed I keeeed.

and SM in NASA is weak. The times I posted are from the ARRC, some good talent in that field.

RTR tried and quickly dropped the B15. The QR produces a wicked vibration b/w 6.4K and 6.9K. After breaking motors, they tried to keep the revs over 6.9K and had no success.

Aside from RTR, the only other B15s I know of are Kojima's Nitto car (that never hit the track more than once I think) and another B15 with a NEO VVL out west in NASA. Besides those, I've never seen another B15 competing (competitively) in Road Racing or Time Attack.

If they are out there, I'd like to know!!

Well the spec miata record is actually lower than that. Mark Pombo ran a 1.42.892 on 3/23/2008. Its on the SCCA website. You are slower than a miata...

I ran a 1.42.xxx at road atlanta during an SCCA event on RE-01R in my old BMW. 220hp, 2650lbs., and NO aero.

I think somewhere you should have posted you won for you class, because you made it sound like you won overall. Maybe I read over that part, idk.

Anyways, glad to hear you did so well. Maybe I will come run a few next season...

Mark must have been moving fast as shiate! In Time Attack, Spec Miatas and Spec E30s are classed in TTE with the Sentra. At the NASA National Champ, we were 1 full second quicker than the fastest Spec Miata.

At any rate, props to Mark. And thanks to everyone for the thumbs up on the Sentra! I cant wait for the VQ35 and a real, working suspension this year

Well the record has been pretty low for a while. Most people who run TTE in a SM are really slow. Mark and Jim are the only real fast guys at road A.

I almost never see a SM in TTE. I was referring to SM at Nationals in the link - and that the car is simply classed the same.

Why not build the QR?? Jim Thompson (Sunbelt Racing Engines) can square you away. I think they were bought out by Kinetic... he is still turning wrenches and built Team RTRs 250hp qr25DE for Word-Challenge their 1st year out.

    01 FEB 2004 - SUNBELT PERFORMANCE - JIM THOMPSON/OWNER

Hi J'son, these are pics of the engine and some of the parts I have with it. I also have a custom fuel rail, all of the accessories that hang on the engine, and an M48 ecu w/ ignition expander to run the whole thing.

    - Forged JE pistons
    - Forged steel rods
    - Nitride crank
    - Titanium spring retainers
    - Light weight lifters
    - .5XX lift intake cam
    - .4XX lift exhaust cam

(Jim never wanted me to release the cam specs - hope that's okay - but he will gladly square you away)

    - IRL style coated rod bearings
    - Custom windage tray/crank scraper
    - Modified cooling system
    - modified oil pump
    - increased oil volume
    - CNC under-drive water pump

I will also have the headers coated and the intake manifold extrude honed.

When this 1st came together Travis (FIR from the Sentra boards) was going to do it. Right at that time he was having issues w/ the guys bashing his kits (turbo) and blowing up their motors - and he had a few members' money and they hadn't got all of their stuff. He seemed knowledgeable but I was scared to pull the trigger w/ so many people bashing him. So I went w/ Sunbelt. Jim is a great guy over there - I think he is still over at Kinetic. The power delivery will be SMOOTHER w/ the v6 - but at a weight penalty... just something to consider. I've been out of that Chassis for a long time so I may have dated information.

Props to Joe though - your car reminds me a lot of the old RTR Spec V.

LOLOL @ 1:43 at Road America in a tin roof car. An Audi R10 does it in high 1:40's and a CART barely sees 1:39.

Sunbelt was an excellent choice! Justin and I were going to build a 250whp QR with some very simple off the shelf parts now avail.

    1. B16 fully counterweighted OEM crank with revised crank signal
    2. QR20 high comp OEM JDM pistons
    3. Ported Head
    4. Rogue CVT Intake (we already have the spacer fabbed to bolt this to a QR head)
    5. JWT 280 cams for the QR. These are still not released to the public yet.
    6. B16 rods

On paper, this motor would make a ton of hp, and spin close to 7200, up from the 6400 stock limit.

We'll build one this year, but the VQ35 was a stopgap till the Hybrid QR is running. BTW, anyone who wants to bolt the Rogue intake to the QR can do it now with our spacers/adapters. We're thinking 8-11whp with this - to be tested.

Forgot to mention, the VQ is 27lbs heavier than the QR25. The bigger problem is (by eyeballing it) 20% or so of its weight is distributed further forward than the QR, which is already in front of the axles. The VQ also sits a bit higher, screwing with the CG. We're upping the spring rates in the front and adding ballast to the rear.

I have no idea how this car will handle.. thanks for the props!
