VTECs have higher compression ratios across the board. Since VTEC is a fuel saving feature, Honda recommends that it uses the grade of fuel it was designed to use. Using a grade of fuel too low for a high compression engine causes detonation. Octane rating is essentially gas's ability to not detonate. Detonation is when the fuel ignites before the spark. A Honda engine isnt extreme enough to be damaged by using lower grade fuel, but you're not helping your car by running lower grade fuel and on a small level you are doing harm to your engine. If Honda tells you to do it, it's for a reason. It's no accident that theyre the world's leading engine manufacturer.
