Default So close....gen III mr2 content

Well my motor is finally in the car and runs good. Just some *hopefully* minor wiring work, change the rear brakes/wheel bearings, and then it'll be drivable.

Quick phone pictures until I can get it out and have a buddy take real pictures of it.

    1991 MR2 N/A
    Gen III 3SGTE
    Blitz Nur Spec Exhaust

    Mods waiting to go on....
    JIC Racing Seats
    Advan SA3-R Classics
    Black interior swap
    Kouki Tail lights

Then some suspension and I'm done!

Thanks I bought the car a little over two years ago. Just now finally got it back! It's been a crazy last 2 years for this car so it's great to see the end getting closer.

Honestly, that swap is a pain in the ass and has been for the past 2 years. I had a shop do it who I wont name because it was going to be for a "hell of a deal." Which ended up not being a hell of a deal and my car being their for over a year. I'd recommend if you wanted a shop to do it, to research them and make sure they have experience with a gen III 3sgte, and not a usdm or jdm gen II. The motors are different, wiring, and all sorts of stupid crap.

Not to mention the motor set is crazy expensive.

But good luck if you decide to do it.

Ya they're fun to drive. I haven't gotten a chance to really drive one with a turbo. Should be a beast. The gen III puts down a little bit more than the stock 3sgte.

Man, there will always be a special place in my heart for these cars, I love em. My wife had a turbo model back in high school (1998), she bought it at an auction for 1400, sold it for 6k about a year later. Man, I loved that car, so f'ing fun to drive, if only I would of known more about cars, I would have kept it. Enjoy it man, looks good.

Actually its the other way around, snap oversteer was really bad pre 91, Toyota modified the suspension to accomidate, which is why the 91 suspensions was so sought after in the 90's. But it is still a Mid-rear car, so its gonna have more snap oversteer than any other config.

There was no '90 model sold in the US. The Mk1s are much easier to drive. '91-'92 had the "evil" suspension, which was improved from '93 on.

My plans are to finish up the little things that need to help finish the car up and then start on suspension and a 93+ rear subframe are on that list.

    Thanks for all the comments

Your right, I was stuck in the 88-91 train of thought from the 2nd gen CRX.

Some of the difference between the USDM Gen 2 motor and the Gen 3 motor sold in Japan

    - MAP sensor instead of AFM
    - Bosch D-Jetronic (Gen III) vs. L-Jetronic (relatively primitive) engine management
    - CT20b turbo replaces CT26
    - Boost raised from 10psi to 13psi
    - Fuel cut raised from 12 psi to 18 psi
    - Different ECU
    - 4 wire O2 sensor
    - Shim under bucket valve shims
    - slightly more aggressive cams
    - Revised internals (pistons, con-rods etc.)
    - Revised cylinder head cooling passages/water jackets
    - Revised intake manifold (8 'independent long ports' reduced to 4)
    - intake manifold inlet air temperature sensor added. i.e. after turbo and intercooler.
    - Revised gearbox with close ratio gearing
    - lower compression ratio
    - stainless steel head gasket
    - factory 540cc injectors replace 430cc injectors
    - revised fuel rail with bigger bore and relocated pressure regulator
    - TVIS eliminated
    - EGR eliminated
    - LSD in 80% of them
    - throttle body increased from 55mm to 60mm
    - inlet valve lift increased from 8.2 to 8.7
    - intake manifold inlet air temperature sensor added
    - Less restrictive exhaust elbow
    - Aluminum oil pan
    - more rigid alloy sump and additional oil baffles
    - Factory Catch can
    - Better Oil Cooler and relocated oil filter (bottom)
    - 4 Channel ABS coupled with Traction Control available
    - No. 1 compression ring described as 'stainless steel' instead of just 'steel'. Oil ring is described as 'stainless steel' instead of 'a combination of steel and stainless steel'.
    - The fuel pressure raised from 36 PSI (2.55 bar) to 41 PSI (2.9bar).

Im not trying to be an ass about this dude, but unless there is some super rare gen 3 MR2 in the lost city of atlantis that had a 3sgte, you are wrong.

Every Turbo model MR2 came with a 3sgte... This is a SW20, a ZZW30 is the Mk3 MR2 which by the pictures this obviously is not. There are different generation 3SGTEs just like there are different generation RB26s and SR20s.

    It's a 2nd generation MR2 with a 3rd generation 3SGTE, really not a hard concept.

Nope, but they do have 3rd gen 3SGTEs in them which put out more power. Same 2nd gen car though.

The title of the thread is misleading, Ill give you that.

Yeah Ididn't want to say anyhting but that was confusing me. I was like... I know the first generation Mr2, and I thought this was the second generation, I didn't know the 2nd generation has 3 sub generations, but I wouldn't really try to separate what you call them to the non MR2 community with the prefix "generation". Us Rx-7 guys use generations for the 3 major generations, and series numbers for when they made major changes, there are 8 series of Rx-7s.

^^ Yeah, I drew a frame of a man running on each fan blade. That is him running at idle

    Here:

    3S-GTE usage in Toyotas

    1st gen - 1986-1989 - Celica GT4 ST165

    2nd gen - 1990-1994 - Celica GT4 ST185(-1993), MR2 SW20 (MR2 Turbo)

    3rd gen - 1994-1999 - Celica GT4 ST205, MR2 SW20(1995+)

Then to describe the actual cars people usually say Mk1/Mk2/Mk3 MR2s
