Watts?

I've never really delt with this area before, so i need some help.

I went out today and bought 12", 300 watt sub.
My friend pointed out a 240 watt 2 channel amp.
will that be enough to power it?
if not, what should i get?

i dont wanna kill my wallet, and i dont want something thats so powerful, it blows the sub. i just want a lil more bass than what i have now.

you need to find the RMS wattage of the sub and the ohms of the voice coil/coils. then you need to match that with the RMS wattage of the amp and at what ohm load the amp does that power at.


say your sub is 150watts RMS and has a single 4 ohm voice coil. You would want an amp that does no more than 150 watts RMS at 4 ohms. If you sub is dual 4 ohm coils then you would want an amp that does no more than 150watts RMS at either 2 or 8 ohms.

what are the model numbers of the sub and amp and we can tell you for sure, but you should be able to figure it out by reading that. If not, feel free to ask more questions. We are all here to help.

Ok. The sub is a Verge 12" subwoofer (VSP124W).
300 watt peak power.
4 Ohms.
RMS power handleing- it says Info unavailable.

personally I wouldnt use either, but they are definately cheap. What kind of budget do you have and maybe we can find you something a little better. You get what you pay for, and honestly I doubt that either of those will last a year.

that amp will only put out about 120 wrms, if that much, and it doesnt say its bridgable.

I wouldnt give that sub anymore than 100wrms and thats with a clean, non-clipped signal.

i dont have much right now. thats why im going so cheap. i havnt been able to work for a while due to injury, and are despritly searching for a job. i really dont mind if these dont last, i barly paid anything for the sub, and if the amp works, its dirt cheap too. When i do get the money, I'm definatly going with a much better system. but for now, its bang for a buck.

but would that amp n sub work togeather?

BTW. I have a panisonic deck.
it has 3 pairs of pre-amp outputs.
Pre-amp output voltage- 2.5
RMS output to channels is 25x4.
Peak power is 50x4.

i found some more info in the booklet. its says 100W (300W max).

i cant understand the rest, its all in codes:confused:...

you can try bridging the amp to the sub, but I'm not sure if it will work or not. Either way it will work. If it works bridged, then the sub will see about 120wrms, if not, the sub will get about 50wrms

dont get and pyramid amp that says 240 its serioulsy underrated.atleast a 400wat max amp will do jus fine

My bro gave me his amp- its a rockford fosgate punch 160x4. i dont know what rms is on it. would that be good?

prob 80x4 rms @ 2ohms,40x4 @ 4ohms but id you want sum decent bass get atleast 400 watt 2channel amp.

check what the RMS is and for what ohm load its good at. That should tell you if it will work or not.

Ya... thats sounding good... i hooked them up... sub is a dud. it went ERRRRRR *squeek squeek squeek* (aquard silence). so im taking it back. I'll just wait ( im selling my boat, which'll probally go toward some of it).

Save your money and buy decent equipment vs rushing out and getting cheap equipment now. It will be worth it. You will end up hating the sound and end up buying something better anyway.

Quality of the equipment and install is far more important than if you have "enough watts" for X sub IMO.
