    Default Supercharger setup from Mad Max Falcon(?)

    Im asking about this stuff because I want informative answers please dont reply if your gonna make stupid comments and expect me to argue with you because that is not the purpose of this thread Thanks for all the intelligent answers.

    Ok so I recently saw Mad Max and I was wondering about the terminology of some of the things used on the car. I think it was a Ford Falcon but correct me if Im wrong. I would've googled this stuff but Im not sure what some of it is called and if there's even a company that makes kits like this for any applications import or domestic. Also Im pretty sure this isnt fantasy movie stuff that was done to the car I believe its been done by real people on real cars.

    Anyways there is a scene when he's cruising down the road with the blower deactivated and he pulls up on a red switch next to the shifter that activates it and suddenly the car comes alive. What is this type of doohicky called? Does anybody make a similar kit for modern day cars? Is the difference in gas mileage enough so that this set up is worth doing or is it better to just get a blower thats always running?

    How is the blower activated/deactivated? <<< This is the most important question. I do not understand how they got it to be turned on and off over and over in the movie.

    How did they alter fuel/spark for when the blower was activated deactivated? Im pretty sure that fuel injection wasnt around when this car was built so there couldnt have been an electronic way to alter fuel/spark between when the blower was on or off. Im sure they did something which got the carb(s) to dump more fuel but what? Also the only way I believe one of those old school domestics would've retarded spark by using a timing light and manually taking a wrench to it. Is there a device which can be attached to the distributor to retard the timing once the button to activate the blower is pushed?

    After having writting all this I realized that very little fuel/spark changes would have to be done if this type of blower setup was only there to add say 4-6 psi of boost and that the car probably wouldnt have any changes made to it fuel/spark wise.

    Also would this on/off blower setup be there only to compliment an already badass NA setup and give it more top end grunt or would it be there to give better gas mileage while off the boost?

    Ok Ive been doing some research and turns out that it cant be done. Or actually hasnt been done. YET. I wonder how long this "imaginary project" is gonna last in my head . Anyways Im gonna do some research and figure out how this may be doable. Like I said above for 4-6 psi very little fuel/spark changes would have to be made especially for a modern EFI motor which also utilizes coil packs instead of a distributor. Im not saying its the best for long term reliability on the motor but modern day factory ECU's can learn to deal with these types of mods.

    Well if anybody has any ideas about how to set up a supercharger to turn on/off at the push of a button please put them out here. I know now that the blower in the movie was actually hollowed out with a 4 barrel inside and had a seperate electric motor attached to it which made it spin. Im thinking that it may be possible to do this on a modern day motor by having a functional blower attached to a electric motor and turning it on and off via a switch. But then you gotta figure out how to get air in there when your not boosting Maybe its doable with a centrifigal 'charger attached to a electric motor which has a custom intake to the throttle body that can suck in air from either the blower or the other regular intake for when the blowers off. But then could I get a electric motor thats powerful enough to push 4-6 psi without being as big a burden as a supercharger that is always connected?

    Yeah Im totally not gonna be able to do anything like this anytime soon.

    do you know how an A/C compressor works? has a magnetic clutch to turn on and off, put a centrifugal blower on that and you have your on/off. have the clutch send a signal to the ECU that tells it when it is on or off, and a chipped ECU could easily switch maps on the fly. boom on/off supercharger

    Good idea Thats one way to get the blower to be on/off but theirs still the issue of getting air in their when the blowers off and Im thinking that is whats really gonna be the hard part. This may be easier to do with a centrifugal SC but not a roots type blower because I can design a dual intake setup which can get air from either the blower or just be NA. Although I would lose the look of a huge blower sticking out of my hood

    how about something along the lines of an exhaust cut-out? it's a solenoid that lets you switch between full exhaust and open DP or header.

    the theory behind the movie is that fuel is scarce so that would make sense to show the blower on/off when few people know what it is. viewers not in the know assume it's going to make more power. mostly theatrics.

    a car like that at the time the movie was made wouldn't have had efi, so for it to even work would be in a roundabout way what crxgirl has alluded to...clutch driven pully for the blower and some alternate intake runner. regarding tuning such a carbed beast...good luck if economy, driveability, and power all wanted--it wouldn't happen. now w/ an efi system as long as the map is tuned for boost it wouldn't matter. blower off=not in boost portion. blower on=in boost map w/ fuel/timing adjustments.

    realistic=no. a supercharged car can get great economy and power as long as it's tuned.

    mercedes benz runs a electromagnet clutch supercharger, an M62 and I think an M45. Look on Ebay $200ish.

    There are a bunch of things you could do to get this setup to work if you had enough time and money.

    1. instead of vacuum advance timing, maybe vacuum retard? or have vacuum advanced when not in boost, and a solenoid to cut it off when s.c. is activated
    2. electro clutch like is A.C -- like everyone else has said
    3. for fuel, you could have a fuel jet like used in nitrous systems or have something to boost fuel pressure substantially.

    I'm sure that are many other things out there that can be done instead of or on top of what I said. Use your imagination...
