    Default d16z6 turbo ?'s

ok so i went against an all motor setup for my little z6 so im just going to boost it with stock internals to make it a little more fun. i have a hydraulic si trannsmission and a cable dx transmission with the long gears, 2nd goes to like 90 mph.. my question is what will make a more fun car, the long gears or the short ones? im only going to be running like a wrx or dsm turbo so im not going to be making tons of power i just want the insta-boost effect to bump the low end up a bit.

    what do you think IA?

i would use the si tranny for more acceleration but be prepared to be shifting alot .. or like me i chose a ls tranny on my setup for gas mileage but its still fun and i dont make tons of power but its fun tho. stay below 10 psi and make sure you get it tuned.and either tranny will make you grin going down the road but i would believe a shorter gear tranny would be ideal but u will be shifting alot tho ... your choice.

His Si tranny has a 4.25fd and is the same as the EX tranny, I would go with that one.

My car I have a Gsr tranny, but would love to put the 99-00 Si 1st and 2nd in it.

thanks guys, thats what im gonna do is put the si cable tranny in i just bought. and keep the cable dx tranny if i dont like the gears or want better mileage, but if i wanted high gas mileage i prolly shouldn't be going turbo.

an update, i just bolted the turbo kit i got up, its got a hf manifold with an adapter plate running the stock td04 wrx turbo. I used to own a WRX and know i had full boost at like 2500 rpm with the td04, i know it was a 2.0 and this is a 1.6 but the honda engine prolly flows much better than the boxer unequal length manifold design so im prolly looking at about the same kind of spool.

as far as fuel upgrades go, if i am just running 7-10 lbs. do i NEED a fuel pump and injectors? I bumped the fuel pressure up to 50 psi today, i know that will prolly put the stock fuel pump to work and eventually fry it. but will it pump enough fuel for that little td04? I have an apexi neo that i am using to vaguely tune it, and also have a wideband o2 hooked up.

i need to rotate the cold side so that the outlet points forward. it sits at the weird angle because IHI turbos have the 3 bolt pattern.

ha thanks man, it bolted up just fine like u said. i made it a little prettier looking with the header wrap and ceramic paint. i did have to notch out the block just a tad but that was to be expected

I would stick with the si and ex trannys. i personally wouldn't venture to the dx trannys. i had a 94 Hatch with a 400whp sohc z6. i ran the ex tranny in it. Even when it was n/a, the ex tranny was the best choice. The si tranny is right there with it. I would just stick with the si tranny, if i was you.

so i went with the cable si tranny. got it running and on about 6 psi... anyone know the stock fuel pressure off of vacuum?

my total price for this turbo kit

turbo, manifold, adapter plate, and downpipe..................$200
    dsm 390cc injectors......................................... .............$45
    home depot intercooler piping lol...................................$45
    small audi side mount intercooler...................................$60
heat wrap, oil lines and fittings and oil filter sandwich......$100
    phereable.net chipped p28 w/basemap and motorola 2.5 map....$230

so total cost of this homemade turbo kit was ....$680

not too bad and all my parts minus the intercooler piping and downpipe are all oem parts that will last and not some cheap ebay parts. I reckon thats not to expensive.
I do daily this car and it runs fine, just a little rich as i am still waiting for the basemaped ecu. i will fine tune it with my apexi neo which i already had from a previous car. i also had my wideband and boost gauge from a previous car... so i guess if you dont already have that you would need to figure that into the cost.

so far the stock clutch is holding fine with some abuse but the stock map sensor which i thought was good for 10 psi or so keeps giving me a code anytime in boost, hence the motorolla 2.5 bar map.

pics of finished product will be up tonight!

ughh i popped the stock headgasket... doh... never ran hot but is bubblin out the radiator and looks like a steam locomotive going down the road lol. i am waiting for the mr. gasket stackable mls gasket that will be 1.75 mm thick, and lower my comp to 8.5 ish so this shouldn't happen again... oh along with arp headstuds. I really should just get a tab at summit..

any thoughts or recommendations on the turbo set up? i am currently not using an oil restrictor and never needed one with any of my other turbo cars, do i need one for this setup?
