Default Import Scene.... is clean going out, and the 90s coming back?

First it was hair styles.... then it was clothes.... now is it happening to the custom car scene (imports mainly) as well. I have noticed in 2009 it seems a lot of people are throwing out the clean look for a "Clean" unique style that is simple yet different. It is usually small mods such as painted rims, wild hood designs, rust, wild fabric in interiors, or steel balls hanging from the tow hook lol A few years ago anyone could spot a riced out honda… today though it seems that what would be rice a few years ago, could now be considered stylish. Its more of a fine line now. For Example… the 2 cars below in my opinion are terribly done. But what were they thinking?... show car?? track car?? street car?? Did he just get bored one Sunday?? If I made a poll “Rice” or “Not Rice” do you think it would be pretty even?

actually i think its reversed, alot of the things that were considered stylish in the 90's is considered "rice" today, most cars today go for that clean, hella flush look, whereas the 90's was all about extra show out, but i cna see wheree your coming from some aspects of the 90's are coming back, and considered "cool" but not enough to be majority just my

To me it looks like shit. There is nothing on the rest of the car that is as wild as the hood or even matches it for that matter. PLUS...I would NEVER do some shit to the hood of a brand new car like that. Its not a Honda....you cant do shit like that.

Well, it is cyclical. In the 90s the cars were all about expression and people were after whoever would put the work into their cars. What people did back then was simply an exploration of modding. If you can do it, go for it and people will respect it. The explosion of creativity at some point hits sort of a collapse and a certain style becomes popular while others are shunned. Enter stance/hellaflush/fitment. Now there is a common goal to achieve. Somehow this was the new necessity in modding. JDM follows this same route as people try to achieve the same look. THIS spawns another creative outburst as people recognize that the new "goal" is creatively restrictive. Now there is effort to break the mold. It is a difficult process as it is not yet accepted. Extrapolate a bit further and you will start to see alot more freedom in tuner modding. You may not like this sort of thing like the camo hood or the crazy graphics... but be prepared to change your opinion or possibly be driven nuts by the next generation of modding. Who knows?

I think the right way to approach all of this is to take it in and appreciate it. If you wanna do what's RIGHT for the scene than build something top notch. EVERYONE can(should) appreciate a proper build. Something done right.

agree... blue hubs, blue lugs, and the hood... wtf. wheels make the car look great! If he included carbon side splitters to match rear and front and used black lugs and kept hubs black and the hood white.. car would be amazing!

The camo print nonsense on the lexus makes it look like garbage....other than that i like it...

The fit looks stupid (this coming from a honda person) and i wouldnt drive one unless it had a K in it...then its just for the purpose of having a quick stupid looking car.

You know what? I like the Lexus. Just needs some dark blue wheels, maybe a little flake, and keep the theme going in the bay would make it complete. IDGAF!

I agree with this guy; if YOU like something, then do it. Fuck what other people think. It's not their car, its yours.

I will tell you what it is, all these young kids jumping on the bandwagon instead of being original. Yeah when I first saw an S2000 with a nice offset it was great, but now things have gotten way out of hand. I myself have friends who apperently need some sort of responsibility in there life, cause everyday all they can think of is what to do to top the next person. It drives me insane to see someone spend all there money on something that can bee takin away in a flash. Dont get me wrong I am still in the schene and love it but I myself have opened my eyes to stuff that matters. All this wide wheels, stretched tires, painting a car each week is pretty lame if you ask me. I will always love a clean stock looking car over this crap we have today. Sorry for ranting just wanted to get that out

Also I could see spending money on a race car cause thats the real meaning of be competitive. That atleast can get you a reward, but trying to make your the next big different thing by doing the same stuff is just retared. Hope that makes since

So what you mean to say is that racing isn't badwagoning? Its been around forever. Everyone wants to be faster than the other so they do similar mods and build on that and keep it moving... but faster. the same thing applies for the aesthetic scene. Sure you dont get rewards for beating another man to shit in the 1/4 but the reward you get is self gratification. that's all some folks need.

the 90's aren't coming back. The scene is simply EVOLVING. it always evolves. Where's the wrong in that? i for one am not a fan of either car posted but i wouldn't jump to saying the 90's are coming back and/or call the mods they've done stupid absolutely stupid. Just because you don't recognize the change in the scene doesn't make the subtle mods they've done stupid. Back in the day folks put their heart and souls into their cars and they were accepted. there was a sort of comradery back then. Everyone bonded over the scene despite their different tastes. You dont really see that anymore. Most of the motor modding folk dont care about the other man. They just wanna go fast! lol. When you feel free to express yourself with the exterior of your vehicle others tend to open up as well. They see your heart and they know where you stand. the 90s will not come back full blown or anything but i think what is truly trying to make a come back is the comradery.

Racing is apart of everything just about. So if you want to go there everyone in the world is on that bandwagon in some way or another. What I am saying is, the import schene was freakin awesome when cars got respect from how fast the were and what the owner had to work with. Any fool can go buy some stupid wide wheel and put in on there car. Just stretch the tire and you have heelflush. Its the most annoying thing, kinda like your wheels but thats another story. I have built many cars from clean and simple to all out lets go fast. The most fun I ever had was in my pos crx with a b16. Thats what the culture needs to go back to. all this multicolor engine bay crap with the 15x15 -89 wheel is so freakin stupid. There are exceptions out there but for the most part its not what made things fun. I love going to shows , meets and stuff but in reality the schene has gone down hill. What we need is some good o' fashion street racing and grudge matches. That way when someone thinks they have hot shit they get a call out and put up or shut up. those where the good days

I would say the scene is more or less dividing up. I hate to say it but S3 has said it basically word for word in the newest mag. People divide up into their groups, fitment freaks, power addicts, etc. These little groups go around on the forums talking shit about the others which does nothing more than aggravate the other and piss em off.

I can say I've posted half the fitment cars in the pics section cause I knew there were a few people on the forum that would see what I saw and liked it, but in doing so I know I pissed off a good bit of people by posting the kind of cars they don't understand and hate. You win some and loose some. I personally don't see how you can (and this is theoretical) walk up to Justin with his CB7 or Octopus or Csmith or Jay and tell them face to face "your car is too low, looks like shit, the fenders are burnt up from the rubbing, your tires are unsafe, what the fuck were you thinking?" Yet people get on forums, get behind the keyboard and say the same words. Everybody has got an opinion, I'm just fucking tired of people not giving respect to the hard work it takes to do anything to a car whether it be a K swap with a nasty gt40r turbo or stanced and fitted with some custom BBS's.

As for the 90's, please. History repeats itself, but there are some things in history people have learned from. I can see how stance can be seen as the new show car in the way it is done up, and looks pretty sitting and rolling and most of the time isn't insanely fast. But I think most have looked back and seen the insane things that were done in the 90's to show cars and think its a little too much, so most show cars that I see now are done with modesty and know if they step out too far they will get shitted on by others....I wonder if thats how we want the scene stay, cause to me it seems like eventually no one will step out and do anything crazy that could be good or bad.

Ok the Honda definitely fits the whole stupid, boring "clean" look. But the Lexus is just beautiful. The hood is alittle love it or hate it though.

And that's all it is. Every fucking car now has this shitty herrafrush look to it, the same low-offset stretched-tire "stance" bullshit. News flash, faggots: you're not doing anything unique if hundreds of other people are doing it. It's all part of the "movement," apparently.
"You just don't understand the movement!" Fuck you, you have the same +12 offset Rotas as every other flatbilling brodawg. The only movement that resembles is a bowel movement, you fucking dick.
If you want to do something original and unique, do something original and unique for fuck's sake. Don't do the same thing as everyone else and say you're unique - because you're not, you're just a fucking poser, so fuck you and your "movement."

    THIS

Is it me or is the S2000 the new civic? Everyone and their brother has one now since AP1s got cheap.

    IMO:
The show car scene of the late 90s was all about being as wild and crazy as you could be. Big bodykits ,bright colors, car audio, chrome this chrome that, etc.

The show car scene today is the most retarded offset wheel you can find and hammer the car on the ground. Almost no attention is paid to performance, car audio, presentation etc. Its about the most expensive wheels you can find, and pinning your car as low to the ground as you can get.

In both ERAs i still never see the point. Too many people are afraid of being original. This hellflush crap is so gay its made me almost completely lose interest in the Honda/Acura tuning world. Its all about conformity. Its about hardparkers that sit at Starbucks on barret parkway on fri and sat night with no lives but like to sit there and jerk each other off about how hella flush their wheels are.

I never spent big money on wheels, mainly because i never wanted wheels that cost more than my car lol I would rather put $3000 in my engine bay in mods to go faster than wheels to make me look cool. I always thought you were more respected for a fast car than a good looking car. Now dont get me wrong some peoples cars i do like. Csmiths car is really nice and the CCWs are different. Jays S2000 i always thought was good looking. Lengs cars are nice even though his S2000 wheel fitment is a little too crazy for me IMO.

But as a whole i just dont get the kids modding cars today, makes no sense to me

But as a whole i just dont get the kids modding cars today, makes no sense to me
    good post.

ehh, i've seen the lex n person, wasn't my cup of tea, it seemed a little tacky, but nevertheless creative..Im one of those people that thinks..it's your car, you pay for it...if that's what you want to do, then by all means, hell..i've been called a ricer in my 350z by people who drive civics, lol..so it's completely a toss up haha.. lately, imo the definition of a ricer is determined by the hater..lol.

My opinion on those 2 cars posted is, that they both work with that done. Ive seen alot of japanese hondas with taht same look, with a mural type hood to go along with the jdm them e of the car. So i know what the owner is doing, or what he has in mind with the whole car so i can appreciate it all. Which is why i appreciate alot of things that other people will quickly call shitty or stupid.

The lexus does it well also, because in person the whole car flows well with the hood done like that it doesnt even stand out as much. But i did like it better before he did that. BUt it looks good either way.

about the scene changing i dont think so, but i do agree with what someone said, that having a nice stance is gonna be something that is gonna be achieved with all completed cars. Whether its a subtle or extreme, its gonna be seen from now on in all or most cars that are built to look good. But this era has brought out alot of things out into the limelight about certain cars.

By owning a big car, and going into a vip style with it, having a proper fitment is 20% of the build...but its not all. I am starting to dislike what im seeing this thing turn into tho, the whole fitment thing is great i love it, but it is rather boring.

I would be more than happy to see the "scene" collapse just to see a little bit of heart back into the game.

collapsed/evolved its all the same thing......the scene will never die..people will always mod cars.....the question becomes how will it evolve? it went from FWD hondas to RWD drift cars to AWD cars all in the matter of 10 years. I see the scene going back to FWD cars again sooner than later. V6 VQ swaps in FWD nissans is the next big thing i think....could be wrong but thats the route im going.

wow, really? like how current is this? my car doesn't really fit in anywhere. if it's a scene thing,i don't really understand it. i used to think if u owned a car u can do whatever u want to do with it. (well actually i still think that.) are the 90's comin back? no. but the real question is: if other people like what u do and copy it,is it better than being one of a kind and nobody liking it?
