Default *HELP* Tow vehicles opinions and experience

I looking for opinions/experience on new trucks/SUV's out there that would be my best choice to tow my Evo and a trailer. It's seems like now would be a great time to buy looking at the low pricing on some of the vehicles. This will most likely be a daily driver as well so take that into consideration. Also, I can never keep any car/truck/etc I own stock, so I'm also looking for upgradeability as well.

The new Ford F150-250 have some great deals available right now I see. Any ideas/experience on GM's line up? The Toyota Tundra looks like a good option. I'm not looking for a full 4 door cab for a truck. A 2 door with the swing doors would be more of what I wanted. Unless it's an SUV, than obviously 4 doors is ok.

I'm going to make a strong effort at getting around the country this season with the Evo. There were several races I missed this year, not to mention my goal. I'm trying not to let that happen this coming year. All help is greatly appreciated

    1.) Your sig is terrible.

2.) Don't buy American Made if you are worried about warranties. There's the intense possibility that none of the Detroit 3 will exist within two years.

3.) Your biggest concern should be buying a truck that will be least expensive for what you need, and thus you need to be sure that the tow-rating of the truck and it's hitch is rated for your Evo+Car Carrier. Your BEST BET is to buy a BWT (Big White Truck, such as GMC single-cabs, work-truck F150 single cabs) These you can buy with no warranty for much less than the cost of a regular retail vehicle because they are intended for use as commercial trucks. They will typically come with the towing equipment installed and a reinforced tail/tow-hitch. Depending on your area, look around for some of the dealerships nearby.

I would offer more help, but your POS sig is giving me a killer fucking headache.

Detroit isn't going anywhere. In fact, if you have any extra money laying around I would be buying some of their stock. Back to the subject, I have a 06 F-150 Crew Cab FX4 that I use to tow my Z32 and is my DD. Its a great truck and I have had no issues yet and I just rolled over 63K. One key issue with towing is braking ability. The trailer I use is a twin axle trailer and with no brakes and my truck handles it beautifully. I have also towed a 30+ foot go fast boats which weigh a considerable amount more with no problem. I have a CAI, Roush exhaust, and an Edge programmer and I average 16 mpg. 13 towing a trailer.

you bring that gas hauler to my side of town, i'll let you hook up to my 24ft and we'll just put my 240 in it(lightest car i own) and fill your truck up and drive to the state line and back(50 miles), then top her off and see if you get anywhere close to 13mpg towing

if you're going to do any type of true towing back n forth to some of these races you need a diesel....any single rear 2500/f250 will do...i would personally go with the dodge or cheby right now due to the fords suck at mpg...but all are good at mods and programmers/exhaust and all that good stuff

I have a 99 crew cab F350 V10 dually with a contractor bed, truck weighs 8200lbs every day and I tow my 42' open trailer with 3 cars on it and get about 11mpg so his 13 is believable to me. Enclosed trailers are horrible on gas which is why I bought the open. I've towed a 27' enclosed trailer with one of our GTR's in it to LA and Miami and I've towed my 42' trailer all over and it weighs about 13000lbs loaded and I have no issues holding 75 all day on the highway, up hills or not. It hasn't been expensive to maintain either. I rebuilt the tranny at 160k and its sitting just under 200k right now with no problems at all and only goes through about .5qt of oil between changes and its loaded with a trailer 80% of the time its running.

Why bother with gas - get a real truck. Diesel.

You can get those for dirt cheap used. Between duramax/allison, powerjoke and the cummins (with that terrible dodge body), I don't really know what to choose. I'd probably go with an old dodge 16v.

    A 16v Cummins?

Is this a new setup where there's 4 extra valves randomly scattered throughout the engine? I'm gonna assume you meant a 12v, since a 16v Cummins would be a tractor engine (Though a bitchin' one.)

And I second the diesel vote after further consideration. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. Part of me assumed you wanted a new truck off a lot, since you mentioned the Tundra. I am gonna point out to you though that if you want a new Tundra/Sequoia...you are looking at spending my whole year's income in gas if you wanna tow with it. Good luck with that, good sir.

Doh, yes I did mean 12V. I've seen this 94 12V diesel go through hell and back. That thing was one mean mother!

I didnt have respect for tractors till I drove a Ford 3 banger diesel (4600?) and man I pulled an E350 van out of a ditch - BARELY OFF IDLE!

    Diesel power!

I don't have time for stupid shit such as this. And certainly don't care if you believe me or not. I don't care if you pay for gas, and the money doesn't matter to me. Its a waste of my time and I definitely have better things to do.

Why do you even care what his mileage is? I don't care if I lived next door I wouldn't bother with your challenge either, he's right, its a waste of time either way. People like you are the reason shit gets started on the internet, you care way too much about other people's stuff. Are you going to bet me that my mileage is wrong too?

if your v10 can tote that well and get that good of mpg then good for you, never owned one so i cant tell you what yours does or doesnt but do know what my brother's and several others do so stick to what you know and i'll stick to mine or you can keep riding the noob's nuts

you want a diesel for sure. Gas trucks SUCK for towing. You also want the diesel torque going up hills. Dont listen to "Z Pilot".......he prolly doesnt even have a car let alone a tow pig.

diesel is the way to go, no matter what. it cost me 200 bucks to drive our company gas dually from cumming to salisbury and back, and i was easy on the gas the whole way there. this was unloaded with no trailer.

Thanks for the suggestions. After a little research I think the Sequoia/Tundra, or a diesel something is where it's at.

Does my sig give you seizures? Didn't even check it out after I changed it.

We have had just about everything. I say a Dodge Dually. We currently have a Chevy 4500, which is awesome for the extra room if you travel a lot like we used to (70 weekends in just '06 and '07), but the power is the same as the regular Chevy dually and the 4500 weighs more – it takes alittle longer on the initial get up and go. We liked our F350, but we wish we would have gotten the Dodge Dually instead of the 4500 when we "upgraded".

I would say def diesel and def dually. Even when we used to tow our Supra waaaaayyy back in the day (OMG 2002) in an open car trailer, it SUCKED towing it with a non-dually. It's just tense driving it. The dually is much more relaxing because you don't have to worry about the trailer all over the road. This is especially important to remember if you haul long distances.

If upgrading is really a concern I would say Ford Power Stroke. They have the most available upgradeable parts and ems, from what I know.

Oh and gas mileage is ALWAYS an issue. I wouldn't even bother worrying about that Not enough difference to make ya or break ya, really.

P.S. I was the one who drove the rig 99.9% of the time across the country, so I definitely know what I am talking about. Biggest mistake I ever made was acting like I was cool enough to drive a 65 ft. rig.

We still have it. It's for sale. It's a good truck, but I would get it for the room more than anything. It tows nice. The dually's just get up a little faster from the jump...and we like faster

OH, great thing about 4500.....turning radius! WAY better than a dually.

That's what I'm talking about! Damn, if I didn't need it for a some what daily I would buy that monster! I even like the black. Thanks for the help Tracy. I'm looking into some kind of diesel based on what I have been reading in here... minus the garbage bickering.... I won't be using a enclosed, as much as I would like to have one. The Sequoia is looking better and better as well.

Kodiak/Topkicks are great trucks, but I don't think that's what the OP was looking for.
