Only the most successful American cars could sell in Europe. European roads are insanely windy, tight, demand a tight turning circle and are fast. The European market demands small peppy, fun to drive and fuel efficient cars that will put up with the most grueling cold weather. It's why you can rent your basic A3 in Germany, go 140, fly through the Alps and get 45mpg. Most all of OUR American cars wouldn't suffice, except for maybe an SVT/Cosworth Focus or Cobalt SS...two cars in which their companies invested millions in to be a successful in Europe.
U.S roads are "mostly" stop and go and flat per square mile compared to all of Europe. Our current domestics (except a few) would be a joke to most Europeans and the reason we have imports and why imports are here is because our own economy can't produce good enough vehicles. It's hard to find our imports in Europe that are not our cars specifically made for their market, and it is nearly impossible to find our American domestics (STS, Malibu, Century) in Europe...yet imports here are a dime a dozen and most perferred by American Magazines comparison after comparison. The quality American cars out now are simply copies of European sedans, hot hatches, wagons etc..except for the legendary Vette/Viper/Stang. Those are in a class of their own.
