    Default No more JDM motors???!!!???

I was not sure where to post this so I'll try in here.

Was on the phone the other day with my JDM supplier getting a price for a customer on an rb swap. (Jarco) Was talking to Mike and he was telling me that they will no longer be able to import ANY jdm parts. He said they had made their last trip! He told me the EPA had put a stop to them importing and as far as he knew that meant no one could import directly into the US now!!!

Has anyone on here herd of this???

I've delt with Jarco for YEARS and they have ALWAYS been the BEST importer I've bought from!

This should've been in the CAR TALK section.

I really don't see all the fuss about importing cars and sh1t. If crash testing and all the other BS is what prevents cars from coming in then that's fuked up.

Either way, we're all bound to die.

Like I said, I was not sure where to post this. I thought that I would put it in here as most of the JDM swaps I do are for forced induction cars.

I highly doubt this is true, i would have heard something about it somewhere. Hmotors, PW JDM, and others would have been talking by now.

Sorry to bust your bubble but you have not been informed!

I was told that the EPA has made it mandatory that ALL motors coming into the US HAVE to have come from a car that has an EPA certification. In other words ALL JDM motors do NOT have this. (As the cars they come out of were never EPA certified here in the US.) I just got off the phone with the EPA and after being on hold for about an hour and transferred about 5 different times, they did confirm this!!

I you would like to call and find out for yourself, here is the number, 1-800-241-1754.

When I asked them why I had not been told by most of my importers about this they told me that the ONLY way to get a motor imported into the US that did not have an EPA certification was to “falsely represent” what you were importing on the import paper work and that most companies would not want you to know they were doing that! Now this is coming from the EPA, NOT me. So if you do not believe this give the EPA a call! Heck, call and complain about it! Tell them it’s not right! Don’t know if it will do any good but it’s worth a try!!

This is the biggest crock of **** that there is! A big part of my business is JDM conversions! If this is not true and if there is a LEGAL way to import JDM motors into the US PLEASE if there are any importers on here, let me know!!

i see it as not a real big deal.. most motors shipped to the US honda/mazda/toyota have similar variants already here.

The car has to have been tested to meet US EPA standards. So lets say the car is a Supra it still would be considered a different car because the motor is a JDM spec engine that was never sold here in the exact form it was in Japan so it will not have an EPA certification. I actually asked this question myself! It’s just another way for the government to screw car guys over! Makes no sense at all!

“Ok, so import them for "race use" only...”

Did you not read my last post? The EPA told me that you can NOT import ANY motor into the US unless it has a certification.

im sure jdm and a usdm supra have the same EPa requirements met. Along with silvias/240's civics/integras rx7's.... there seem to be a loophole in this new rule.

Yea, I see this being a problem, and already is, when importing complete cars here, but doubt motors or parts would matter much.

I'm sure there will be ways around it. Like importing them from Canada.

I'm a shop owner who has to consider the law in every thing I do. It's just the times we live in I guess!

I hope so! But as of about 2 months ago Jarco is no longer importing!

so where is this law written at? Id ask for written documentation of this new magical law. and then when you have find a loop hole. or import it as a race motor.

this is nothing new i dont know why you are making a big deal about it.

JDM motors have NEVER been "legal" in terms of emissions standards. Doesnt mean you cant MAKE them meet the criteria.

Jarco may just be closing its doors , and this helped facilitate that.

But i know people that work at NadAuto an they are still brining in containers left an right. Same with Hmotorsonline.com

They may be cracking down, but the JDM motors arent going anywhere anytime soon. I suggest you look elsewhere for your engines

The exact rule is that the vehicle the engine is put in (Since the engine itself is missing some critical emissions control components when it's outside of a car...not the least of which are things like Cats and exhaust tanks) The vehicle's engine must have emissions equipment that MEETS or EXCEEDS the emissions equipment that came with the vehicle. This means a JDM B20B in a D15 original Honda can still pass emissions, but has to pass emissions based on the original D15 engine. The only time funny stuff happens is when you do stuff like KA to RB swaps. 4 to 6 cylinders makes it tough.

Anyways, you're not supposed to be able to bring alot of this stuff in from Japan. Why? Because the US Government really has nothing better to do than stop the importation of stuff from other countries. They certainly can't stop drug trafficking or reduce violent crime or help lower the number of incidences of stolen vehicles, they can't get their hands out of our wallets or save us some money by not having congressional investigations into the not-even-illegal use of league-banned substances in sports...so they crack down on this crap. Same reason why they cracked down on R32 Skylines lately. Just the government being what the government is, a hindrance to freedom.

Edit: Not to say there aren't some good reasons for rules to be made, especially concerning importation of goods into the country, however the importation of motors based on some idea of environmental protection is patently absurd. The minority of people here who would even want to makes it such a minor thing, combined with the often minimal changes. Hell, I'm looking at importing an RB25DET from Japan to go in my 240z. Trust me, with the way my L24 is running right now an RB would be a massive improvement for smogging. Doesn't phase me though, '71 isn't emissions controlled and never was, I don't even have a cat!

From my understanding, JARCO is no longer importing because they got black flagged by customs. They got too greedy and tried to import too many whole cars..big no no. We are still able to get used JDM engines, trust me i have a very reliable source.

One of my employees called NAD looking for a 92 Accord motor and they said they were all out! WTF. I dont think they are not shipping anymore to the U.S. it is just that a lot of people are switching to 4cyl so they are harder to come by now.
