To put it in your language, from 1979-1998[US] there were 3 different generations of RX-7's. Do you think the average car person is going to be more familiar with which of the 19 years each generation changed or the 3 chassis codes? Actually 4 if you count SA but that will throw most people off. The point is most "car" people know what the FB is, what the FC is, and certainly the FD...but do they know what a 1985 or 1986 is?

The letters distinguish a generation, no different than Jr. or Sr. behind a man's name. Deal with it or go play dress up with barbies and purses.
